Prey Alone (new Sins solo/mp map)

New map and appeteaser ;)

I'm just tweaking the AI things now for a map I'm about to put up.  It's a One layer Versus Eight Player (and one AI) map.

The stand alone player has no production.  It will be up here shortly.  The map is named "Prey Alone" and I did it some time back.  The "Three-Against-A-Thousand" post reminded me of it.

The title of the map comes from an excellent short indie film acted entirely  before CGI sets and bearing the same name.  If you want to get in the mood, here's the YouTube link to watch it:

This map was done as a proof-of concept when I started playing to show how a map can serve almost as a mod or minigame.  Maps are way underutilized in Sins.

Ok--here's the map and readme: http://www.worldstrider.info/images/PreyAlone.zip  (It's two text files, no viruses)

It's important to go through the readme for start position instructions and strategy tips--otherwise you're in for a a lot of frustration.

Here's the readme contents as a preview:

Prey Alone
An 8v1(+1 AI) Player map for Sins of a Solar Empire.
By Sinperium

The positions on the map are fixed.  The first slot (player one) is the stand alone player who is the Prey--and it's recommended to play this position as Vasari.  You can play any of the races but Vasari is optimum in this case as you'll have few resources and no income or production at the start.

The last player slot (player zero) is for the AI.  Best set the AI to research or any setting that gets its trade ships moving fastest.  You can play this slot as a player too but will be pretty bored as it only has scouts and no production facilities.

All the player slots between the first and last are for the HuntersThere can be up to eight.  I don't recommend Hunters play as a locked alliance but they may if they feel their opponent has a big edge in skil on them.  Hunters will want to cooperate as they start out with three ships: a scout, a light frigate band a colonizer.  Later in the game, if not allied, they will be looking for advantage on one another--and I think it's more fun that way (and more fair to the prey player).

The Hunters will want to use the planet menu to search the planet for artifacts and  the first or second try will grant you the wormhole travel artifact.  Best as soon as you get it to exit by the convenient wormhole next to your starting world (a dead asteroid).  This jump will take you to an uncolonized and undefended Terran planet.  I'd suggest you grab it fast.

The Prey player will need resources.  the starting resources are just enough for you to search Two of your starting worlds (dead asteroids) for artifacts.  the worlds you want to search are RESEARCH ONE and RESEARCH TWO.  They will be the top ones on your empire tree.  After the first and second try on each you will have the galaxy and wormhole travel artifacts allowing you to move freely about the map right away--and you will need to in order to get resources.  As  Vasari, your starting scouts (the only ships you have) will be able to capture resources in plasma storms and at gas giants and asteroid belts scattered throughout the map.

I'd recommend getting resources by this method and then later perhaps by raiding the AI trade fleets (found most easily at suns near their homes).  they are quite wealthy finds due to the large number of trade centers the AI possesses.  The AI has no ship building facilities and only inhabits dead asteroids so it will not be able to replace destroyed trade centers either.

As the Prey player sends his mighty (small and puny) scout armada out to gain resources, the hunetrs will be colonizing their first world and possible others (though some will have a heavy start defense).  as they grow in strength, they will most likely try to hunt your prey ships down.  If you lose your fleet you have no options--so don't let them eradicate it.

A push to the core to try to take out the Prey player at his home will be tough as the Sinperium has one major stronghold between you and the Prey base worlds.  I'd really wait a long while before trying to pass there.  You might try a run with TEC armistice but you may still get mauled badly.  You were warned.

If the Prey takes my recommendation and plays as Vasari, eventually he'll be able to build kosturas and use the returning armada abilities.  As TEC, he will eventually gain the ability for a logistics center at each of his worlds (16-24 in the core).  A Jarasul with the planet draining ability is also an excellent way to get resources.

So if either side hesitates or delays or foolishly rushes, they're most likely dead and won't recover.

Fight until one side or the other is pummeled to death. Pirates should be OFF (there is no pirate base).  Both sides will want research and the Prey player starts will all labs maxed out (but no cash).

Hope you enjoy it, it's very playable solo and diplomacy is usable by all players.  Comments and suggestions welcome.

The title Prey Alone is also a play on words--see the YouTube link above to find the secret. O:) It's an easter egg!

Final Note:  Galaxy Forge broke the map on a crash and so I edited the galaxy file in Notepad++ as such to fix the errors.  Notepad++ is a free open source text editor good for lots of things and if you open the map with a simple text program like Notepad in Windows, it may look a bit garbled.  Works fine in game and if needed I can save it out in a simple text editor format.

:)  Looks interesting, will give it a try and let you know. I am assuming you could also use the map with AI Hunters?

As solo play in single player?

:)

Very cool, thank you.

Yes--as solo that would be it--and I'd make them a locked alliance if it was AI only.
