So many near-perfect records on ICO... how? Very intimidating.

I'm not active in MP but when I go on ICO occasionally, 70% or so of the players I see seem to have played tons of games (often over 100, sometimes a whole lot more) but usually only 5 to 10 losses or so, if even that. Statistically, how is that even possible? Do the ICO regulars regularly fight against noobs who get discouraged and refuse to log on again? Do they artificially forge their records? Those are the only two explanations I can think of, and given that a significant number of the other 30% are smurfs, wading into MP is intimidating me greatly. There had to have been SOME accounts or people who have suffered a great many losses - did those people simply delete their accounts?

Or maybe the players with the best records refuse to play games they expect to be challenging with their main account? I don't get it.

I would have expected the skilled multiplayer players to have played games against other skilled multiplayer players, which I would think would result in a significant number of recorded losses... the numbers of which are nowhere to be found. Usually.

I think its mostly because some games don't get finished and some of the wins are probably from games with friends vs the AI's

It's not a loss unless you press the surrender button.  For whatever reason, most people don't press surrender.  Therefore, what you must do is look at games played and look at wins and determine the percentage on your own.  I know it sounds stupid, but it's something that has never been fixed.   When you see me on, you'll notice my losses are much higher because I do press surrender.

The reason why you don't press "Surrender" is that many times a player will have been beaten, but his team will still have a chance to win.  By pressing "Surrender" the replacement AI does nothing at all.  It won't make new ships or move its current ships.  A beaten AI isn't much help, but if it can make ships and serve as a thin meat shield, at least that's better than nothing.  Also, many players just feel that they haven't personally been beaten when their allies were responsible for losing the game.  For those reasons people just press Quit and not Surrender.

The way to properly read people's record is this:

Wins = Wins x Completion Factor

Losses = (Games Played - Wins) x Completion Factor

The Completion Factor is that portion of games that end up being legitimate--games without early minidumps by someone.  If an ally minidumps out of the game 5 minutes in and everyone quits to remake the game, it's really neither a win nor a loss.  I figure that the actual Completion Factor is about 90%.

Dirty Sanchezz is right, but the other reason why I don't surrender is because i usually play 5v5 matches, and I tend to personally feel that its unfair to surrender and receive a loss statistic. I only believe you should surrender if you lose in a 1v1 match, as this shows you lost because of a better player then you. 

In a team game, there are many things that can go wrong, for example being placed in a suicide position ( a postion between two oppponets) or losing to a person with more feed then you. Losing to a person with more feed then you isn't a bad thing, because it shows better teamwork in that team, but in terms of a 1v1 perspective, it should not be counted as a loss. Same as in a suicide postiion.

 

Thats why my record only shows 2 losses, both from 1v1 games. The rest of my 5v5 games are quits and dont show on my record.

:rofl:  So Germany didn't loose WWII because they were in the middle and didn't have a fair team or same amount of feed. This will take a while, I have to rewrite all the Wikipedia articles. haha, I luv it.

The win/loss rate is unreliable.  You can count the number of games played to get a general sense of the experience of a player, but otherwise the community is small enough that we go by personal reputation.
