A few suggestions for Rebellion

Hi,

I am back ... no need to commit suicide ... actually I was never gone. Playing Sins, reading the forum and waiting for some rebellious news :D

I have played hundreds of Sins sessions vs AI and some vs ppl. But there are some little issues which could be changed:

Artifact search on Planets must get cheaper or must be changed a little bit. Like, the first search(very cheap) reveals if there is anything on the planet. If you find something you'll have to search another time(expensive) to get the Bonus. If the first search reveals nothing, there could be a little possibility that you can find something or you won't find anything at all.

With the new ship class there should be a new option to get even more ships, like a gigantic fleet size otion.

Upkeep change(fleet size). I have some ideas for that:

Upkeep changes with the ships you have and not the ships you could have. After a devasting defeat you could get more res to build new fleets, since youre upkeep went down.

Upkeep changes with the planets you have based on the maximum planets you could get in a game.

Points you spend for upgrading plantes and ships:

Atm you can spend only three points for a special ability and you get(for ships) ten points max. Why not open the way to specialize ships(and planets). You only get ten points but you can spend up to 5 points in one special ability. The first three points you spend on a ability upgrade the ability like we all know it but if you spend a fourth point in an ability such as the Adaptive Forcefield of the KOL you'll get a bonus on the shield(more hp, faster recharge, resistance upgrade vs xyz). The super Special Ability gets max three points to spend. This will give the players the possibility to individualize the cap ships.

This option would be good for Planets too, you can only buy 10 upgrades(you will have to buy them like it is now :D ) But you can upgrade a planet to a breeding place for you empire and have much more ppl living on it or you upgrade it so that you can build a few more civillian or military stations....

Thats all, maybe some other ppl here have some ideas too which would make Rebellion a great update.

Agreed; planetary exploration is currently only worthwhile for Advent with a large number of planets (due to that nifty discount).  One simple approach may be to increase the likelihood of a planetary bonus, and get rid of the chance to uncover high security protocol (such a horrible effect).  If there was a greater chance of getting a consolation prize, it might actually be worthwhile.

The whole point is that it gets harder and harder to spring back as fleets get larger.  It's already very difficult to break the bank for mature late-game economies, and if upkeep was reduced every time they took casualties it would be effectively impossible.  This mechanic is designed to help end long and stagnated games by attrition where neither side can get a decisive military lead.  Without it, there would be too many games that would end in stalemate.

So, I totally disagree.

Upkeep is percentage based.  I don't see any reason to change this based on map sizes.

There is already a plan for 4 ability levels and 2 levels for your capstone abilities.  Personally, I'm worried it will be a lot of developer time and effort that doesn't change anything.  People already tend to specialize capital ships with one primary ability, and mostly ignore secondary and tertiary abilities unless they're passive.

In practice, we need the opposite of this: something to encourage diversity.  There's already a huge benefit to specialization, and if anything we need something to encourage people to do something else.

But you can upgrade a planet to a breeding place for you empire and have much more ppl living on it or you upgrade it so that you can build a few more civillian or military stations....

I don't see a need for this.  We already have planetary upgrades and lots of options for logistics utilization.  For smaller empires, planets are usually left with a minimum development level and a focus on expansion is paramount, so this feature wouldn't be used.  For larger empires, the goal is on uniform high productivity layouts across most worlds, with only a few exceptions closer to the front-lines.  I don't really see this adding anything meaningful to the game.

I have a very simple suggestion which unfortunately has a more complex solution, 'scalability of PC hardware'. I get the whole arguement about creating a product for a wide audience and chasing after the latest and greatest isn't the best use of a developers time and resources.

But here's the thing...

I play PC games because they look good and play good, the base of my PC hardware is now 4yrs old its not cutting edge its average very very average. It does however have 4 physical CPU cores and it does have > 4GB RAM and DirectX 10.1 GPU.

Can Rebellion atleast scale to a 4yr old system this time?

If you have more than 4 GB of ram and CPU/GPU models from 4 years ago, you'll probably have no troubles running the game, perhaps even on high settings.  For most hardware setups that are anywhere near current, RAM is going to be the bottom line for performance in Sins.  For most high-end systems, the game is held back by being a 32-bit application, so a lot of low-end systems can get comparable performance.

The problem I have is that on high settings today my system is very under utilised, SoaSE doesn't seem to scale above low-end systems.

Rebellion doesnt need to push the limits of current gaming hardware, but can we atleast agree that a 4yr old system (probably 5yrs by the time Rebellion is released) is now todays low-end, and an 8yr old system is obsolete.

It's hard to be missed if you're not on Ironclad Online.
