Have a noob question

I have played GALCIV2 and Homeworld (all versions) and wanted to know if Sins is similar to either one?  Now I now Sins has RTS combat which I'm not a big fan off (don't care for click-fest) so is it slower paced than your typical RTS?  OR is it more like a Total Wars in space sort of game?

I'm sorry I re-ignited this thread.  Seems like a lot of bad feelings are around this game.

I appreciate GosFan77's comments.

Please accept my thanks for such a wonderful game.

Hank

PS: I realize the heated debate on this thread is typical with militaristic wargaming websites.  Its par for the course I guess.

I wouldn't be, if they didn't argue about it in this thread they'd find another one. There is some animosity between the mostly single player crowd and the mostly multiplayer crowd, but most of the time its a friendly community, so feel free to ask as many questions/leave as many comments as you wish.

Most of the players are pretty good natured. Fact is, we have a great game to play whether it be those of us playing 5 player FFA with Cruel AI or 5v5 MP crowd, either way-this is a great game that IC has given us. I was merely pointing out that due to the inherent rushing nature of online MP, those of us who are natural turtling players are sometimes turned off by the nature of MP. But I have nothing against that crowd and love this game.

Me being a turtler, agree with gamerlamb.

gamerlamb ... me too !!

I'm starting up another campaign as Vasari ... I really like their ships ... the design that is.  I'll find out how well I like their capabilities soon.

.. and it is a great game ... I'm a devoted proponent.

Starbasing enemy homeworlds is always a fun tactic.

I think Ironclad did a pretty good job on making all the races unique, though some of the Vasari technology is pretty unique even for Sci-fi. I hated their music though so I didn't play as them very much until I replaced it with some of my own.

How did you replace it, Goa? Do tell. Me curious.

With a "music replacement mod" that is extremely easy to make.

A. This may or may not be necessary, but convert all of the music you want to use to .ogg format. There are many of free programs that can do this, but I used foobar2000.

B. Place them in a new folder called "Sound".

C. Go to your SoaSE root directory (with the .exes). There you will find the Sins sound folder.

D. In with the sound effects are all the music in the game, usually called say "Advent 1" or "Battle 5" etc., pretty much any file that's over 1000kb is music. Find any music you want to replace (Vasari # for example) and rename one of your .ogg tracks to that name. Continue until you've done replaced all the music you wish.

E. Go to your mod folder and make a new folder called "Music Replacement Mod". Put the sound folder with your recently renamed .ogg tracks there.

G. Enable the mod and now whenever the game would have played the track "Advent 1" or whatever, it will play the track with the same name in your mod folder.

As this mod has a checksum of 0 (you're just telling the game to load a different track basically), it can be used with any other mods or even multiplayer without problems.

Or if you don't care for saving the originals you could just overwrite the "Vasari #" files in your main Sound directory.

I use custom sounds. I first copied the original Sound directory to have a backup copy, and then just manually overwrote (some of) the stuff in the Sound directory with my customs.

Progen+Skirantra is a highly effective 2 capship opener combo. Skir provides repair and SC and Progen provides Cap ship sniping & Colonize. Kanrak is the earliest LRM to hit the map needing only 1 Mil Lab. I usually skip LF and go straight for a Kanrak + Scout early fleet to compliment my opening Cap Ship. This combo of scouts to soak up damage and kanrak for heavy hitting easily clears even fortified desert and terran worlds.

I think the Progen is an Advent cap ship. The Skirantra is a Vasari cap ship.

Good luck trying to build them at once :) You must have discovered some sort of interbreeding technology!

While for the sounds its probably not a big deal, its still really bad practice to delete any of the original files. Once you get a shortcut to your mod folder its really no easier to do that than to just make a mod that can be turned of and on at will.
