I am right in thinking that if I build a Jarun Migrator in order to build the Orkulus Starbase, I will forfit my achievement?
Yes, though if you still feel you deserve the achievement in spite of it, you can edit the achievement file and give it to yourself.
No matter what race you play you can't get the capitalships only achievement and still build starbases as you need to build a frigate to get them. So if you want to get it the "natural way", yup you are stuck with capitalships and regular defenses.
This post made me realize that I may have been making a false assumption all these years. I don't remember the wording of the achievement. Is it to win with ONLY Capital Ships, or just not use frigates? In other words, can you use cruisers but not frigates?
Internally, the game makes no distinction between frigates and cruisers, they are the same thing as far as its concerned. So no cruisers aren't allowed either.
Considering the game will award you the achievement regardless of the map or difficulty level of the opponent, most of these are pretty easy to get. Try playing an easy AI on point blank and use the Sova Carrier against it. Should be a piece of cake with the resource handicap easy takes. Beating an unfair difficulty AI in a straight 1v1 is harder than almost all the achievements.
Especially the "Beat x hard computers on your own", play vanilla sins and they waste their resources on each other while you can slowly expand until its 1v1
