Growing the ICO community for Rebellion

I believe that ICO should grow, and not have its growth hampered by players at the top.

I would suggest that the online community have a "big brother/big sister" statistic to encourage high skill players to take new players under their wing to train them.

The new players would be able to comment on this program as to the efficacy of the teaching (after the lesson they would receive a prompt), and no player with fewer then 100 games WON could be a "big brother/big sister".

Other new players would be able to see these comments and determine if this is a safe online player to learn from (considering the negative press the online community gets).

This would negate angry smurfs alienating new players from the online community as bogus "teachers" and would allow for well intentioned high skill players to build a reputation of building the community.

The only problem I can see with this would be that smurfs would pose as "new players" to provide bogus feedback, but in the long term I don't see them having much impact on a good teacher.

Food for thought :)

I've actually taught a few players.  Problem is few of them stay around that long :(

LoKi_ has potential though

Yes LoKi_ is one of rare new players that actually listens to suggestions think with his own head and implement advices he gets. He is learning really fast.

I took time to teach some newbies but they either didn't stay long enough didn't listen or just didn't understand why particular advice at particular time.

Sins is game with high learning curve and a game of counters. With no real middle class players you need to learn fast and respond really fast or get used too loose a lot of games. With newbie loosing in bigger games his team will loose and if he doesn't learn eventually he will get banned or kicked from rest of skilled games.

True but if it takes too long teacher might get frustrated and give up.....

I should also add that some of them just ignore or tell willing "teacher" to STFU.

I think this is a great idea. I am still very new to ICO and it is pretty intimidating for a newbie like me to get into multiplayer. A few people have been very nice and one offered quite a bit of help, which is greatly appreciated.

So, coming from experience, teachers are a great help and make the game a lot more fun. Thanks to AstoundinglyHorribl for bearing with me.

Sounds good to me.

I'm not that worried about smurfs creating problems: if they're interested in not letting Sins online die I see little motivation for them to pretend to be teachers, trounce, and taunt noobs who appear genuinely interested in learning how to play online. That said, this assumption of rationality is far from reliable...

But the biggest obstacle to this sort of thing is the lack of communication infrastructure on ICO. There's only one tool that can be used: the chat box, which is usable, but unfit for anything remotely complicated. When I first started playing online, I was even a bit surprised that Sins players had even been able to organize what they use for 5v5 matches on their own. The best way to direct newer players, I think, is to give them a link to the forum here so they'll actually be able to discuss strategy, organize other newbie games, and chat - but the process of registration etc probably deters people, and even then they might not come back after the first few visits. One idea is a built-in web browser or something (way too much to ask for), or prominent buttons around ICO which open external web browsers to the forum or something... but the point is, something needs to be done to make it easier to players online, especially newer players, to communicate with other players. Even a sort of messaging system which can handle larger amounts of readable text would be a serious improvement. The difficulty of organization and communication for players on ICO is a very serious problem. Not that it isn't doable - but it could really use something else other than the general chat box.

Although I'm no expert, I'd be happy to tutor newbies...

heh.

Star, you've played for a while and you would have more newbs to lord over if we grew the community.

That means more adoring fans for your abilities and more people to ooo and aaaa over the replays showing how epic of a player you are.

We can train the new players like sheep to do our bidding!

I mean...

erm...

any newbs please edit that last part out.

The ico community is like a ballon, feed it with new players and it will blow up.

I think the answer is not to make the ico community grow but to make an astounding game through rebellion and promote and advertise that through all pc game channels and social media. People will come and feed it regardless of the smurf kickers and mean old hosts. Hosts are not the issue here at all as much as i hate there practices but its the game itself establishing itself in the market.

In other words... making the ICO community grow is what should be done? I don't get it, are you contradicting yourself?

I'm merely saying the ico community problems can't be solved by fixing them directly. E.g fixing the hosts, fixing the smurfs. That stuff is part of natures course in a see of sharks being the number one predators.  Lets not point at the ico community and point at the game itself. What we have is the sharks food source (new players) being depleted which leads to the extinction of both parties. What we need is to have more new players to be violently bred (rape, human farms, cloning, mind control and brutal marketing) from outside ico to ignite the eco system with life.

Clones are better than smurfs. don't confuse the 2.

All I can say for now is that we will be (and are) putting a substantial amount of effect into Rebellion's multiplayer and improving the overall ICO experience.

Revamp random map generator please . It's bugged like hell, also algorithm for generating neutral extractors could use a little tweaking.

How good is the trailer?

Hmmmm

If anything, I would say a cash or prize-oriented tier-type competition would be an excellent way to grow the ICO community.

We could have 3 tiers:

Pro

Skilled

Noob

And we have a signup with a supervisor who watches for identical IP addresses during the competition, so that someone who is participating in the Pro tier could not get away with another entry in the Noob tier on a different play account...

You would have filled games with 2 teams on only one predetermined map, (possibly a galaxy forged map?)

Anyhow, this would not really be implementable at the moment, as there is so little social connection in-game through Impulse/Gamestop, but if Reactor (I have heard nothing about it) is going ahead, then this competition could be plausible in the future.

Oh well, my fantasy ends here...

The original games budget was $1million and it sold 500,000 copies.

It costs around $250,000 or more for a cg trailer..

Do u know the budget for rebellion?

Frustrated much?

:D

IC has another project that they are working on currently, and they are spending time and money on that as much as Rebellion. (I think)

So their budget will be split between those two projects...
