Thank you for the answer, although its not what I wanted to hear. Well, I guess if any game will make me dive into STEAM, it'll be this one. Damn you guys. I love you though. When will we find out about collector's edition?
End of Wunderbar_007's quote

I just have to join in on this one.

Since there's no choice for people who have already preordered. If you are going to have a collectors edition, how about auto upgrading all preorder customers to collectors editions.  I know, I know, I'm pushing my luck.  But hey, you don't ask, you don't get.  You can't blame me for trying.

Having thought about it all, the big deal breaker for me and our LAN crew will be the ability to have LAN (either in steam 'offline' mode or just straight up LAN) with friends in the same room. My internet connection is bottle-necked and we often have large LAN parties once or twice a month with Sins (6-10 people in the living room). We tried to LAN with SC2 and the required interface (with 8 people trying to cram through a 1mb down and .1mb up connection) made any LAN games practically unplayable. Personally for me, if this issue is answered one way or the other it will be a big deciding factor in my purchase. Steam is steam. I wish there was an alternative but at the moment, from a cost/gain viewpoint it sounds like it's a no brainer (no offense intended Zombie ).
End of boshimi336's quote

Rebellion will feature LAN play the same as the previous Sins' games have.

You are wrong, look at Crusader Kings 2 (recent release by Paradox) - its Steamworks game, but it doesnt need Steam to be running to play that game.

The 2012 list of Steam games says that Crusader Kings 2 doesn't use Steamworks.

That list is incomplete.

You can ask in Paradox forum - its been discussed for looooooong time.

Oh for crying out loud... Steam is not that bad.  It's a free service.  Always has been, always will be.  Runs great sales all the time that beat any other platform and even retailers prices out there.  Normal purchases are overpriced though.  The DRM is minimal comparing appearances to what it actually does.  And when compared to other forms of DRM is unobtrusive to the customer.  Ubisoft anyone?  As said many times before, it can be used completely offline.

I am usually staunchly against DRM (I even chose to do full report and presentation on DRM in university), but Steam is far from the worst thing out there.  It's nothing compared to the likes of Ubisoft's always-online DRM, EA's periodic reactivations, other games login in-game to play like company of heroes and other titles, Bioshock's download data during installation just to install and even the dreaded 3 max install limit of some games.  There are far, far worse options out there.  I was even staunchly against steam at one point until I did my research and played around with it.  It is "DRM", but not really either when compared to other forms of DRM.

Look, DRM is a fact of life in PC gaming.  Sometimes you get lucky and get to avoid DRM altogether.  But mostly you are going to get DRM in one form or another.  And considering the myriad of horrible, horrible DRM out there, Ironclad and Stardock could have done far worse than Steam.  I've come to like steam.  No disk, just start the app and go.  I even find it a bit hypocritical to claim Steam DRM and then promote the points of Impulse.  I hate to break it to you, but Impulse is also DRM.  While once you install you don't have to have Impulse running to play the game, it's still DRM (if you bought the digital download version) because you had to activate it online through impulse. Having steam running is hardly terrifying and not resource intensive.  I agree, I hate DRM, but you need to pick your battles.  Steam is not bad enough to justify this kind of response from some people.  Especially when considering the alternatives.  I'm right here with you.  I haven't bought a single Ubisoft game since they put their crap always-on DRM on their games and will not ever buy a game from them until it is removed.  So yes, I agree that taking a stand is a good thing.  But weigh the pros and cons and choose the right battles.

As for Stardock and Ironclad, I have to give you props and my thanks.  As I mentioned before, you could have done far worse.  And out of all the options, I think you made the right choice.  I'll happily play this game on Steam and I'm looking forward to it.  And at the very least, thank you so much for not choosing Origin.  That is one digital distribution platform I won't go anywhere near.

Disappointed it's Steam exclusive, I like Steam alot, great sales and intuitive but for some games I don't like being forced to have the client up. I liked being able to open Impulse, update, close it and play. Not sure if I'll keep my order or not, really disappointed.

I've never encountered a better platform than steam and I've always wanted SOSE to show up on it one way or another.

Like I said, Stardock has one less customer. Ive moved onto Star Ruler anyways. Has much greater potential.

The only downside is the graphics, which actually arent even that bad considering.

Again people, what crack are you smoking? First of all, Rebellion isnt just a Steam exclusive, its a SteamWORKS exclusive. No offline mode.

No, you didn't even bother to read Yarlen's full post that you can play Sins singleplayer in OFFLINE mode. You just won't be able to access ICO.

Yes we have a dislike for Steam but at least take the time to read the full post.

It's turned into nothing but a bitchfest against steam. Can we get back on topic about the preview?

Welcome to the future people. I hate DRM too, but the DRM I hate includes having to keep CDs in the drive, secret codes you enter from the game manual each time you start, spyware-like programs that scan your computer, and hardware locking.

Steam as DRM, is entirely inoffensive to me. I'm online pretty much 100% of the time anyway, and even when I'm not, most of my games WORK OFFLINE, and it sounds like Sins will too. The things you can't use are ICO, but if you have internet access why not just open steam and bam, access granted.

To be honest, I was super happy when I heard Rebellion was using steam. I hope it uses steam and syncs my saved games across all my systems. I hope it uses my steam buddy list to make organizing multiplayer games really easy. I hope it means I don't have to type in my serial number, when I reinstall, I just download and BAM it works. So please, use MORE STEAM.

That's fine so long as users who don't like steam could continue to enjoy the series without using it as they've always have. And while Stardock has the right to make the choice would be customers have the right to complain about it.

While it would be better if people posted in this thread, feel free to make a thread talking just about all the new nonsteam features that were revealed. A fresh discussion would probably be more helpful anyways.

I liked Impulse, even preferred it over Steam, before Gamestop raped it. Mind you I don't mind Steam, though at time it has issues with it's offline mode. That is to say, not working until you reconnect to the internet.

I liked impulse as well... Before they started selling crap with 3rd party drm on there, it was paradise.

Gamestop rapes everything, you should see the fiasco they did with my Civ IV Beyond the Sword preorder... GOOD GOD, you could NOT get a preorder more wrong.  I show up to the store on the day of release (having had payed the FULL price in my preorder) only to be notified that the retard behind the counter sold my copy to someone else because he thought I would not come to pick up the fuckin game I paid full price for ahead of time.  You could not be more incompetent.  I canceled it, got my money back, and bought it from amazon.  And I never went back to gamestop ever again.  And on the way out I saw a nice sign saying: "Preorder today to guarantee your copy!"  What a joke.

What I find most interesting about the preview is the part about the build process. I know there has been some discussion on titan balance - whether making them easy to obtain but very weak until leveled, or difficult to build but strong from the start were some of the options.

Because they are built in four stages and other players are alerted (so they can strike before it is done I imagine),  I assume they are going to be very strong from the get go, unless building one is meant to be a high risk gamble.

My other thought while reading the factions differences was the following -  when fighting the TEC Loyalists, how does one break through a grav well with two star bases and titan defending it.
