Planet Scale

It feels like planets are pretty small in comparison to ships. A typical capital ship looks the size of a continent, I understand making the ships smaller takes away from that "epic" feeling. However making the planets 3-4 x larger with the ships remaining the same I think would make planet bombing and such a little more convincing.

Its a scale thing. Making the planets bigger would either require them to increase gravity well size and thus travel times, or keep gravity well size and reduce available volume for stuff. Its also a matter of being able to find the stuff around the planet at a glance. Basically realistic size in space would make everything important too small to notice and make everything take forever.

Planets and ships have never been to scale. If anything I think the scale looks a bit better in Rebellion, maybe only because we can't zoom in as much.

GoaFan77, but I like zooming in because the models are so beautiful.  Maybe they could add a gallery that lets you look at all the ships and their stats.  Maybe it could be the beginning to an online user manual.

What's this about not being able to zoom in as much??

Well they made the bombing explosions smaller, so that helps a bit with planet scale. Obviously this stuff isn't scaled realistically, there has to be a good balance between how big/small things should be between each other. I think the scale is fine the way it is. About the zooming, it's been well discussed that you can't zoom in as much anymore...

Don't even get me started on the scaling.... you cant have a playable game with correct scaling.

I agree that the scaling is just fine.  However, a cool mod would make all of the ships, structures, etc. much smaller, as to make it to scale.  It would be fun.  It would be completely ineffective.  You really would most likley get bored quickly.  But, it would be awesome for a while.  I doubt you would be able to finish a game, as it would take so long.

Maybe I wasn't clear? I just would like to see bigger planets, without shrinking anything else. A Large portion at the end of a gravity well isn't used since it's outside of the minimum jump distance. I don't know all of the mechanics outside of visual representation so I'd assume you could make the planet model larger and just move the minimum jump distance to the edge of the well.  This way nothing is effected gameplay wise, and research that shortens the minimum jump radius wouldn't be bugged either.

It really would slow down gameplay :(

I don't see how, no stats are affected, just the physical representation of the planet.

Larger planet animations use up more RAM and will result in even more slowdown in later games, especially on larger maps. Besides, gameplay wise the planet sizes that are currently being used are probably better. Sins isn't a simulation, it's a RT4X game. Realism isn't its main goal.

It's not about realism, just would make it feel more epic. Anyway all I've seen is negative feedback, thanks for the comments.

Just think of it like you are watching a tactical starmap where non-essential objects are altered in size to help you focus on the important stuff.

Well, everyone of us from time to time has said "hey, this isn't realistic scaling... It'd be cool to have it realistic"

Trouble is, nobody has any freakin idea as to how big things would have to be in order to reflect true scaling. I see that your post is limited to planet scaling...

well, you realize that it would make gravity wells bigger, right? If you leave ships the size they are, and say that fighters are the size of aircraft carriers, you would need a planet about as big as most Sin's solar systems....

If you wanted to downscale ships so that it better matched realistic sizes, I think we could save alot of processing power because frigates and fighters you wouldn't see at all and capital ships would be dots. Titans, I think you could actually see the model, but it would be pretty small. Maybe the size of the current game's fighter?

On the other hand, if you're just saying you want the planets a little bigger, that's doable. I think the trend towards bigger and bigger ships/structures has caused this feeling, however. When vanilla came out, you really felt the ships were these tiny things compare to the planet.

You'd have to increase the gravity well sizes, that is a stat. It increases amount of distance your ships have to go through by x squared.

In my view the planets are the essential focal point of the game.  Holding planets, or not can greatly alter the course of an encounter...planets should have more "personality" that makes them more unique.  The planets in sins never felt like they were really worth fighting for...aside from the logistics slots and economic income.

Improving planets in some small ways could lead to interesting planetary invasions that wouldn't require much more then some small graphical changes to the planets themselves.  I for one am against lobbing nukes at planets and then recolonizing immediately..i mean come on!  Space based amphibous assaulst would be awesome...

Negative feedback doesn't exist, since feedback is always given to help the author of a product, idea or whatever is being commented on in order to improve upon it. We simply tried to explain the downsides larger planets would have for the game. Just trying to help out, that's all.

There is nothing wrong with the idea, but think about the increased amount of time you would spend when all of your planets would be as big as the suns that are currently in the game. It takes a long time for a ship to get from one end to the other...

I still think they should just add all the special planet anomalies that are currently not implemented. That alone would improve upon how special each planet would be.
