For some reason i am losing colonies from what i can see no apparent reason early on, keep in mind i haven't played since the original game came out and i never got the expansions so is there a mechanic im missing perhaps or is this a bug

Err are you killing the militia and killing siege frigates?

Is emeny culture bringing your alliegences to 0?

All of this has been in the original game and could explain why you are losing colonies randomly. Also pirates can siege planets after a certain point.

There are various ways of losing a colony early on. Did you kill all the krosov siege frigates in the gravity well? Did the enemy build a novalith and shoot you with it? Are the phase lines changing color, then the enemy might be sending you his culture already.

Define early on, AI rush to build tech centers. The TEC Loyalists can start building Superweapons much sooner and cheaper than the other races / factions.

Could it be the Reapers returning from Darkspace? Someone call commander Shepard!

Most likely its AI spamming Novaliths.

Might also be your own Novaliths. Happened to me when I build 10 of them and left them on auto fire while my fleet was out conquering. The Novaliths fired before the planet was conquered, but I colonised it before the missile arrived.

If you look in the bottom left of the UI, you should be able to mouse over the icons there and get some headlines about what's been going on. One of them should tell you why you lost planets.

ok so i looked at it more closely when it happened it appears that i was abandoning my planets, i have never encountered this mechanic in the first game, is it new, and how do i counter it in the future.

You abandoned your colony? What? You cannot do that. The only thing I know that might cause you "abandoning" your colony would be "wail of the sacrificed", but that one should not autocast...

I'd like to have more information now. What race were you playing, how many research centers did you have, did you research any high level reasearches yet? How many enemies are on the map and what race do they belong to? What difficulty level are those?

Yeah mcintire, you can abandon your colonies, it's the same button you use to scuttle ships. Just don't push it.

My guess is, either you were in window mode and kept clicking other applications near the bottom of sins (where the scuttle button is) or you kept hitting the hotkey for scuttle (which you can disable via the menu)...

Okay, learned something new there. Good to know for future reference.

Ouch. Talk about friendly fire. Someone is getting court marshaled over that one!

If you take over an enemy ship that is under heavy fire by your forces it might die even after changing sides. You can increase the probability of taking over ships by sending your fleet away or un-toggling auto attack, but you should only do that if the enemy force is weak.
