phantom capital ships

Playing on a standard 1v1 game, nothin' special.
went to an AI asteroid planet and wiped everyone out with my fleet, but there are two AI capital ships & fighters there....but they're not visible, attackable, and i can't center on them. Yet my system view has the planet blinking red like it's being attacked.
let me know if more info is needed (system, game, etc)
