Stopping kamikaze hoshikos

To preface, I should say that I'm playing the rebellion beta, and always using the newest patch of it.

Now on to the problem. I'm fairly new to the game, and have only played the vasari in the original game, and now advent in the beta. I got a bit overdosed on the Advent though, and i wanted to try out the TEC.  So I check some of the most commonly used strategies and tips for TEC, and apparently Hoshikos are the best thing since sliced bread.

Ok, so I go ahead and try out the little buggers. I'm cool with their repair abilities, so i can see their use, but my hoshikos seem to have a huge deathwish where they kamikaze charge towards the enemy to auto attack them, which unsurprisingly tends to get them killed. Then I try turning off the auto attack. The little buggers just sit there twiddling their thumbs while the rest of my ships get shot. Ok that was fun. So I try forming a fleet and having the cohesion set to all close, so that even if they're at the front of the battle line, then at least they don't go crusading solo against a solo defense turret running past all the enemies. That kinda worked, except, my fleet is now doing the "re-forming the fleet" dance all the time instead of attacking the enemy. I dislike using the fleet because of that. Well, I could micro them, but I do have other things to focus on besides baby-sitting my hoshikos, and i would really appreciate it if they had at least some autonomy.

So now comes the question: How do you keep your hoshikos from committing suicide?

Other than micromanaging them, there is no good way.  I wish there was, believe me.  Sadly their abilities work funky if you turn off auto-attack.

Thou shalt micro.

Try setting their attack range to local instead of gravity well. you can even turn make them hold position and park them in the middle of your fleet.

leave on auto attack and set the attack range to local. this is good because they will contribute dps as well, but you will have to tell them to move if you want them to chase something or if they're in a danger zone.

you could also then have them follow a capital ship or something, though in my experience they sometimes stop following.

Turn off autoattack?

not great advice, though I could be wrong (I dont play TEC generally).

Certain abilities, even though they are beneficial and not aggressive in any way, will not fire at all if auto attack is off.

I believe this may have to do with the AI use time...many abilities have the use time "OnlyInCombat", and in order to be in combat I believe a ship has to either have taken damage recently or fired its weapons recently...if these ships aren't auto attacking, the only way they'd be "in combat" is if they are taking damage, which doesn't always occur....
