Suggestion: Solar Flare Upgrade

I had an idea that might be a cool addition to Rebellion or a future version. As you know, there is a meteor control upgrade for star bases. I haven't played with it yet, but I love the concept. It got me thinking - what about a solar flare upgrade that's only available to star bases around a star. It could somehow produce a solar flare or harness one to cause damage and maybe an EMP effect to nearby hostiles. Maybe it would also affect the star base and have a long cooldown. It would be a great emergency tactic to lock an attacking fleet down for a bit while reinforcements are on the way. Just a random thought.

Sounds pretty cool actually.

Sounds pretty cool.

why not have it be basically the same thing as meteor control, but be a different visual effect in solar wells, just for the coolness of it?

Sounds like a cool idea, maybe it could be something a little different depending on the faction you are playing.

But I think it will have to have some major downside, like destroying the star base or perhaps everything in the system, to prevent abuse.

If it was anywhere near realistic, it'd be pretty OP as it'd be a "Kill everything, including yourself" button.

Since when has anything in Sins been anything near 'anywhere near realistic'?

Sins is supposed to be futuristic. :P

The idea is nice, but it might be overpowered even if it was a destroy-all. An damage/EMP effect with a flare from another part of the star is less OP IMO, with it disabling all friendly ships/starbases in the gravity well as well as enemy, to prevent 4 Starbases from spamming it and pretty much giving absolute control to the Starbase owner. It gives incentive to instead send a fleet to the star and get the drop on them.

Btw, is this making anyone else think of the Inhibitors from Revelation Space?

Solar flares realistically do destroy like everything in their way (they're strong enough to damage satellites all the way here on Earth), but it'd probably be nerfed in the same way that nukes get nerfed in every RTS.
