Rebellion insta-crash

Whenever I try to launch rebellion (or for that matter diplomacy) the game simply never comes on. The first time I started it the game allowed me to register, and then BSODed as soon as it began to open the actual game. Now as soon as I activate the program, the process runs for 2-3 seconds and then instantly terminates. I thought at first that I might have a variant of the black screen error, but since that's been identified as a problem with old nvidia drivers and I have an AMD graphics card I have no clue what the issue is.

This is my exact problem on my current hp dv6 core i7 sandy bridge laptop with amd 6770M switchable graphics.

fyi bump stardock has basically given up on getting this game to work with amd 6670M or any other AMD switchable graphics card. Their email was apologetic but pretty clear, and it was not addressed in the 1.04 patch.
