first, you NEED a archive manager like 7zip from www.7zip.org or winrar to extract the folders and files from the archive, then

assuming you have sins 1.193/entrenchment 1.053/diplomacy 1.34(the current non-beta versions), AND your windows is installed on the 'C:' drive,  the Mods NEED to be placed here for xp
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.193
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.053
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.34

or here for vista/windows 7
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.193
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.053
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.34

NOTE the first two folders after the 'user name' are hidden , so to see them you must first click on 'tools' then 'folder options', then 'view', then click on 'show hidden files& folders' then click ok, then you will be able to browse your want to the folder. I suggest when you find the folder that you create a shortcut to it on the desktop

NOTE 2 the 'user name' in the above paths is your WINDOWS login user name, eg Administrator

note 3 these shortcuts assume your windows is installed on 'C' drive

and if the mod you want to use is from an EARLIER sins/entrenchment version place the mod in the mods folder FOR THAT version eg mods-entrenchment v1.03, then download and run my mods updater from the latest version archive which will have the same number as the vanilla sins version number, and AFTER updating the mod(s) to the current version for any mods of pre 1.04 entrenchment ALSO run the manifest maker on ENTITY manifests on EACH of the mods EXCEPT for total conversion mods

I have winrar, That isnt the problem, The problem is that it says im not ALLOWED to do it, As i dont have administrator access, Even if i run winrar as the administrator :/

I've tried untoggling read only for it, and then applied the changes, but then when i go back onto it, it comes up that its still read only again

you ARE trying to place the mods in YOUR user name space, and not inside ANOTHER users SPACE aren't you?

you could try extracting the mods to a folder under your my documents, and them moving the folder.

but it would help to know which windows you are fighting, and also which expansion of sins you are working with.

I'm using the normal sins pack, trilogy, I'm trying to place it into my user area, but as the only user account on my machine is an administrator, its fucking up and not giving me permission

sproginator, which windows version are you running, as on xp pro sp3  in an administrator account I have no difficulties accessing & altering the folders needed, and assuming you are using administrator as your user name here is an xp path

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire

and for vista/w7 the path would be

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire

regarding the ownership issue in vista/w7 if you right mouse click on the folder there should be an option to take ownership(possibly in the properties page or when you click into the folder).

hope this helps

Bring in an anti-virus program. There are lots free on the internet.

And maybe this will help your other issue as well.

As for the mod, still wont work, still needs administrator permission even though i am one lol

im running vista
End of quote

This is your problem. Upgrade to Win7. :P j/k

So what is the exact problem? Are you trying to edit the files of the mod? Or run the mod? As far as running the mod you should have no issues with administrator. It never touches that aspect.

No its the installation, when i extract the files, i get the error message that i dont have permssion to edit the folders contents so to speak

So you unzip the files without issue, but when you move them to the appropriate directory it throws up the error.

What .exe are you attempting to run the mod on. Trinity? Or Rebellion?

and WHERE are you trying to move the mods too?

harpo

Trinity and im just moving the files into the mods folder:

C:\Program Files\Stardock\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods

Then that is where the problem lies.

C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.193
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.053
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.34
End of harpo99999's quote

You put the mods in one of these files depending on which .exe you plan on using (Diplomacy = Trinity)

Right there.

You're putting it into the program files folder. In order to move to that folder, you have to run explorer.exe as administrator. But that isn't even the correct place.

You must put the files in you %appdata% folder.

The path is %appdata%\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a solar Empire\Mods-Yourgamehere.

If you have anymore problems with malware not letting you do stuff, PM me.

Is this the file location you are talking about?

C:\Users\Emo Dai\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-v1.19

That is mine hehe

If you are using a mod for the original game then yes.

That is what I love about the newest version, Rebellion, they finally ditch the %appdata% directory to store the files, and store it in the Documents folder isntead

Yes, no more stupid MICROSOFT demanded hidden filing.

Hold on, i now have more mod folders

C:\Users\Emo Dai\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.00

C:\Users\Emo Dai\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.05
