PIRATES! Should they always be enabled for MP? (rebellion)

This seems to be an often brought up issue in multiplayer, and i'd love to hear everyone's opinion on it so some sort of consensus can be reached.

IMO is say they are always a must, not just for any TEC Rebel players but i believe they have a balancing effect, add depth to the game and also provide an option for players who are rushed, especially by Vasari rebels.

Ive heard some people seem to go with allowing if FFA but turning them off if teamplay, but i still think that they have a place in all types of gameplay. The players that dont like them appear to not like them simply because it doesnt benefit their style of gameplay.

Well i hope that gets the ball rolling,

Pirates are usually just a annoyance. Thing is with pirates most of us just place an SB at like the astroid next to the pirate base with repair bays if we don't have TAR from the TEC rebels.

From that point on pirates arn't even issue and just exp farm which imbalances capital and titan levels especially when you kill the pirate base with the titan alone. You tend to gain 2-3 levels just from that.

It isn't that it doesn't conform to our style of play but rather the pirates just mostly worthless to begin with.

The Ragnarov is a very good Titan with excellent anti-fleet abilities...Truce Amongst rogues is also good for early expansion...I don't think pirates are necessary just so it seems like TR is more fair...

pirates go off.

AS Rovert10 put it, for any experienced player pirates are xp farms. In games of skill it unbalances the game.

I'm hardly one to speak for the multiplayer community in Sins but if other games are any indication...

I agree with the reasoning in the previous posts.  While Sins is already hard to play in a 100% balanced-map sort of way, pirates add even more of a 'random' factor that muddies the water when people are trying to match skills.

Imagine that you're playing a 1-on-1, nobody places a bid, and the Pirates attack you first simply because you happened to be the player that they defaulted to.  That doesn't contribute much to a level field if it's another player you're trying to match wits with.

Well i rarely see that happen, Usually there is some sort of struggle over bounty. Looking at the other comments here, valid points arise, and i agree that late even mid game pirates are mostly insignificant/annoyance but its early game actually the first raid that counts the most imo. If a player who for instance is cashfloating and building up their econ whilst putting very little resources into an early fleet is going up against a player who goes for a fast fleet + rush and hasnt got 2 cents to rub together, the cashfloating player is gonna win that bounty struggle and the rushing player is going to have to expend that much more resources (be it a starbase or keeping their fleet back to defend) to fend off that first pirate raid which buys the cashfloating econ player time.

I believe that there are currently some balance issues with particular races employing an OP rush strat or so ive heard (and appear to have witnessed)

vas rebels cough cough*

So i personally like the early game effect of pirates yarr

EDIT: also i have noticed that on small maps truce among rogues is useless without pirates. not worth the money by the time u have cleared the few non- asteroid/dwarf planet gravity wells there are no more neutral or at least un contested planets left

That particular situation doesn't happen very often, no but the point is that it's a significant random factor which is generally not desirable in competitive matchups.

And don't get me wrong, I actually like playing with pirates, even in the casual multiplayer games that I do play but if I were actively competing against somebody or another team, getting attacked or routinely experience-fed by a random third party would really skew the "who's today's top player/team?" calculation.

Adding on to the fact that some races just don't have the necessary eco to maintain a bounty (ie Advent). Imbalances things even more that way.
