Could someone explain to me how the trade ship works exactly?

Hey everyone, I'm super new to this game.

 

I want to focus on the advent and I don't really understand how the trading post logistic structure works.  I see that you can use it as a refinery, but I want to make more credits than I am currently.

 

How do they work, what's the best way to use them efficiently?  Thanks!

FYI that refinery ability is near useless, and the Advent have a bit harder time with trade too because they don't have any trade upgrades. But trade is so important every player needs to learn how best to use it, so its a good question. :thumbsup:
