[Rebellion] pc restarts on game launch

My PC restarts every time I try to launch Rebellion. Intro goes fine, restart happens after it, when main menu should be shown.

Game was working fine till today. Today I've started a game, but after launching I decided to load different game saved last night. I didn't quit to main menu for that. When I load the game, my PC restarted, before game was loaded. After that my PC restarts every time I launch the game and main menu should be shown.

I've tried following:

- verifying game cache in Steam

- deleting all config and save files (in My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion and Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire in Application Data)

- uninstalling Rebellion, cleaning all files related to game in Steam subdirectories and redownloading the game

- updating graphic drivers to latest version (301.42, clean install)

None of these helped, PC is still restarting, when I launch the game. I've run out of ideas. It was working ok till I load that game from last night... I've never even had a crash during beta.

I'm using Win XP Professional SP3 PL. I see it isn't officially supported, what is very weird, as Trinity was supported on XP and it is same or similar engine, but maybe someone will be able to help. Upgrading to win 7 is not an option for me currently.

edit:

I've run:

chkdsk /F C:

sfc /scannow

didn't help. Even log for applications is corrupted after each restart so I can't check it.

I have the same bs problem.  i did find a way to play untill this fix this , it works for me, might work for you.  Find the .exe in the steam folders, eg. programfiles/steam/steamapps/common/sins etc, and there are  2  .exe,  one has "Dev" at the end.  run that one.

I have to delete all the savegames and other stuff from the My Games\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion  or wherever it is, everytime i want to play but at least i can play.

A spontaneous reboot often means your computer is tossing a Blue Screen of Death but is set to not display it. BSODs are generally caused by hardware or driver problems, and the error message it shows can help pin down exactly what the issue is.

To have your computer display BSODs instead of rebooting immediately, go to Control Panel->System Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery Settings and uncheck 'automatically restart'.

The next time it crashes, you may get a BSOD similar to the one below (not all highlighted parts may be present):


Write down the information in the highlighted areas before turning your computer off. The information there can then be researched online to see if others have experienced similar problems, and what the cause was. You may also get a 'windows has recovered from a serious error' message when you turn your computer back on--if you do this, you should agree to send the report to microsoft. You'll then be forwarded to information about that error on Microsoft's knowledgebase, if they have any.

Indeed it was set to restart immediately. I've turned this off. I didn't have 'windows has recovered from a serious error' message at all. I'll check BSOD next time. Thanks.

Is there any chance to have this fixed by Stardock? I know that you are not supporting XP (how convenient;)), but as you can see there are more people still using XP and having such problem.

BSOD screen allowed me to track the issue.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

for file Pdhd2Wdm.sys

Address F6B933F0 base at F6B8B000, DateStamp 4ae94da0

 

This file is one of driver files for my sound card - Audiotrak Prodigy HD2

I've switched my old card to this one about one month ago. I have latest drivers installed and I doubt, there will be new drivers at least for some time.

 

I've googled for it, but I couldn't find any fix. I removed the card, then plugged it in again, reinstalled drivers, tried to turn it off an on, but I couldn't get rid of this problem completely. Good thing is that I've found workaround (which at least is working till now).

1. Turn off Prodigy HD2 Audio in Hardware Manager (no need to turn off Prodigy HD2 Controller, because it doesn't use this file).

2. Launch game and run new game or load save game (the one which you want to load later with sound).

3. Quit and turn on Prodigy HD2 Audio in Hardware Manager.

4. Launch game and run new game or load that save game accordingly.

 

I was afraid I won't be able to load games, but thankfully it is working with save games too.

I haven't tried your workaround, but it may be good for you to check, what exactly is causing the problem.

 

btw. it would be nice to have option for turning off intro completely.
