Hello,

I have just noticed the latest standalone/expansion is out and...

On the one hand, I am a total fan of SOASE since the first release.

On the other hand, I always try to avoid digital sales (like steam) because

- I've always felt more comfortable with my own box (I feel independent about the online system)

- I do not like the idea that I purchase something I cannot resell later if I want to

- I like collecting real stuff (not vaporware)

Does anyone know if a ral retailed box version of the game is planned, and if it will be steam/online drm free ?

 

If it is not planned, I would probably go for the steam version but I really feel like I am forced to do so and I do not appreciate it...

To my knowledge the only physical version will be the collector's edition that will be offered to pre-order customers.  If they don't sell out, they may be offered to everyone else, but we know it will cost more than $50.  The only other option is steam.

As far as I can remember, I wanted to pre-order the game but I could only find "digital preorder" with $10 off the regular price (which is why I did not do anything waiting for a boxed version). I probably missed that offer.

I may wait a little more to see what they offer in this version and if it will be opened to everyone.

Any idea if the collector/boxed edition will be steam free ?

No the actual ICO servers have all been moved to Steamworks servers. You'll be forced to use it regardless of purchase location or version.

Rebellion uses Steamworks, so regardless of where/how it's purchased, Steam will be required.

Thanks for all the clarifications.

Too bad steam has become a must for this game... I will purchase it online then, the main purpose of a box was to be independent from the system. If it's just having a box to have a box, that does not help me much :(

I will follow your link and try to purchase it now. I hope the price reduction applies worldwide (I'm in France).
