Chris Roberts--Star Citizen Updates & Info

Yes, awesome does exist.

Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

Welcome!

If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.

If not, you’re still welcome!

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.

I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.

I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.

With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.

With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.

If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.

I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.

My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.

If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.

The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.

My name is Chris Roberts.

And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck).  Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.

I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.

I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years.  I'd highly recommend it.

I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)

So perma death still can happen?
End of ElanaAhova's quote

Yes.  Read death of a spaceman.  Each time you 'fail to eject' costs you a point from your hidden life counter.  Ejecting may cost you one as well if no one rescues you.  Getting wounded in say a boarding action may cost you one unless one of your buddies gives you first aid and drags your sorry butt off to a med bay.

In the end (at this present time), no matter what, your life will expire and you'll have to pass your belongings off to an heir or trusted associate.  It's basically you with a different name and different reputation.  All of your previous assets still belong to you.

There is no rescue mechanic, which Chris Roberts has more or less stated in 10 Questions video.

Instead, if your floating about in space, you just press escape and you respawn to your last friendly docked position.

What i recall being mentioned is that injury will effect flight performance. I dont know if that mechanic has been implemented, or not yet, but Chris did say something about the more you are injured the worse you will fly. Also your toon could show "battle scars". Again i dont know if that has been implemented.

The thing about claiming something was 'more or less stated' is that it's up for interpretation.  Claiming there is no rescue mechanic is absolutely, 100%, not true.  It's actually already in the game in part, with full implementation once they build the in game comms (voice chat).

What was "More or less stated" was that in a populated system, hitting esc or something will activate the local search and rescue and you will, after a short time, respawn at your last safe space port.  HOWEVER, if you eject in less civilized space, aka lawless space, where there may not be any local S&R, it will cost you a "life" and you may respawn at a hospital instead.  There is no S&R service such as this that a player can join as a job option and get paid for it.  At least officially.

This, of course, does not factor in player ships with tractor equipment and large cargo bays where one could 'rescue' an ejection pod.  That is, after all, the primary selling point of the Cutlass for those that intend on using it for things other then piracy.  There is also the fact that spacewalking is possible and is a part of Arena Commander already and any ship can pick up a person floating in space, especially an ejected pilot. (So long as they have a suit capable of spacewalking.)

You guys brush up on this.  You'll need rescuing...a lot.

And Arena Commander is live.  Sinperium, get your challenge coin ready for me, I'm coming for you, and you're going to be owing me a lot of beers.

Finally made my pledge, and bought the cheap ass aurora (marquis to get beta access) to start out with. gonna get a feel for it before i commit to getting a better ship, or use this one as a battering ram. Though i am afraid my laptop even though it meets all the min specs except the ram (i only have 6 gigs). I have a feeling its gonna slide show. We'll see when its done downloading.

I've discovered I'm far more deadly in the 300i than the hornet.  4 to 1 on the kill ratio.  Still getting used to the different movements of the three ships, but it seems that I have better success doing run and gun tactics over turning and duking it out.  Can't wait for my 350R or M50 to become available.

The Aurora...  Meh.  Will probably be better once missiles start working, though I typically don't rely on missiles since they usually are expensive and miss a lot (based on the cost to replace versus other types of consumable ammo).

Yea im not too thrilled about it ether. I wont be picking too many fights with this wreck, but was too cash strapped to get anything better. I view it like an old nissan hardbody pickup truck.. drive it, and beat the hell out of it until it dies. Learn the mechanics... explore what i can.. if it can fight for what its worth all the better. GRRRRRRRRRR still downloading!

EDIT: DAMMIT!! The game wont work on my laptop!!

I'm ready to be a "Wookie" to someone's "Han."

*Pets Bison* Good Wookiee.

You know I wouldn't fly one of my bigger ships without you...  And more times then not, I'll probably have you flying in a second ship.  After all, what's the point in using a Retaliator without having a Constellation or Freelancer MIS swatting fighters out of the way?

Stress, you get something that runs the game, feel free to stop by the hangar anytime.  I'm sure we can find something you like flying until you can own one of your own.

Deal, saving my quarters for the new rig to play this eye candy...

Though i cant run the game (yet), i do not regret my investment. I was pretty sure i met the specs. I just didn't know about the most recent update that killed everything DX10, and under.

My laptop obviously doesn't cut it any more. I'm gonna need at least a grand to build a decent rig (this includes the monitor, and other peripherals like keyboard, mouse, and speakers). I have been checking out newegg.com, and i think i can build something relatively cost effective. That will last a few years. Still debating if i want to joystick, or mouse this one like freelancer. Anyways its time for a new rig.

I'm pissed because i "just missed" being able to run the game, because they updated the cryengine to use dx11 exclusively. So if you dont have a dx11 card, or GPU. Then you are out of luck. However there is a modder that is trying to "downgrade" the recent update so that you can run SC on a dx10 rig. So there is hope.

Speaking of Freelancer. That commercial is awesome (Is that Lance Henriksen narrating that commercial??). I also checked out the "Next Great Starship" thing going on. Modders are gonna have some REAL fun with this game. The poly counts for ships are absolutely sick. Full Interior, and Exterior on the same models. I could just see someone building a 10 million+ triangle fully functional capital ship.

I see great things coming from this one (if we can get it to work).

That happened a while ago.  But anyway, if you build it, I can set you up with a loaner ship or two until you can buy a better one in game.

*Is secretly building a crew for really big ships (hoping for a battleship at some point)*

The question is.. Is it possible own a battleship in the vanilla un-modded verse?

Yes.  It is possible, but probably like the Bengal, it'll likely be persistent and will have to have people on station 24/7 or have a really good hiding spot.  Though in the past, Wingman said you could purchase one and have it to yourself...  but he probably had a few too many drinks by that point and was just talking out of his ass.  So when the PU goes live, I plan on getting The Wingman drunk off his ass so I can get one.  ;P

So far I'm choosing to leave my MISC Freelancer stock. I've had the package for over a year now and am waiting on more game details before I start switching it up a bit. What I want to run is a light mercantile / courier boat with pure defensive armaments and systems. Forget dog-fighting; I just want to light up the drives till they're melting slag and shoot all the missiles headed my way while I book it to my destination. If you can't beat em, stuff bigger engines in it. ^_-'
