Overclocking Issues

Hello There,

 

I have an AMD 4100 FX Quad Core processor.

After finding out that Rebellion can only use one core, I thought I would try an overclock the machine.

The problem is that, for some reason, my PC is running MUCH slower than before.

 

Trying this has taken about 20 minutes and my PC can't seem to run videos (.avi) while my overclock is enabled.

I imagine something has gone wrong here, but all i'm trying to do is get a better Rebellion experience.

It's lagging on small fleets is driving me crazy!

What kind of programs are you using to monitor your hardware and temperatures?

And what programs are you using to check on stability of the system?

That would be AMD OverDrive.

I've managed to figure out some of it now.

When I activate the CPU Overclock, from 3.6 to 3.8 it lags my entire system.

BUT when I activate just the graphics card overclock, it seems to work fine.

 

Any idea why?

Probably CPU OC causes instabilities in the system.... 

I have no experience with AMD OC but I managed to squeeze 4GHz from my i7 with stock clock at 2,6GHz.

Download prime 95 and run some tests, If you get BSOD write down what error you got and google what is wrong.

In most cases you need to increase voltage on CPU. 

Also get memtest. It checks out if memory settings cause any problems.

Here is great article for how to OC Intel processors but it is on overclocking forum so there should be guides regarding AMD CPUs as well.

I OC my CPUs from BIOS and I advise you that you do the same.

Do you have any programs that OC automatically if needed. Let me explain. ASUS has program that installs with MOBO install which OC automatically for about 200 MHz if system struggles. When you do OC it is important that you disable such options in BIOS. If they run they cause instability... 

You might check those programs 

as mentioned before 

  • Prime 95 (CPU load and stability test - It will run all cores on 100% load you can see how hot it gets in case u need WC)
  • Memtest (Memory related tests)
  • Core Temp (monitor temperatures of system
  • CPUID - CPUZ (system information)
  • MSI Afterburner (GPU related)

 

Once you do OC especially if you live in warm climate keep an eye on temperatures. If you OC in winter system temperatures in summer will be much higher and make sure you regularly clean dust from radiators fans etc.
