Scuttling Cap Factory

I've read sometimes of people who reccomend scuttling the first Capital Ship factory when your first Capital Ship is almost ready, to get some resources. However, as a noob who never played multiplayer on ICO, I do not fully understand the benefit of it. Could you please explain to me why you should (or should not) do it? Won't you find yourself at a disadvantage when you will need to build another Capital Ship? As a Vasari, should I research Improved Salvaging first?

Thanks,

Draco

I usually scuttle my frigate factory/cap ship factory once I have a good chokepoint in my possesion and place my frigate/capital structure there. But then again, I'm a noob :P And it definetly isn't a bad tech to get for vasari if you intend on scuttling things.

The reason in MP is in certain situations you aren't going to build more than one capital ship early on. When you need the lab spot or an extra factory early it can save a lot of time and resources to scuttle the capital ship factory.

I don't typically scuttle my capital ship factory early on. This was a common tactic when speed settings weren't quite so fast as they are now. On Faster settings I'm not sure it's as prevalent as a starting strategy though I can see cases where it might add an advantage.

If you were playing a game without Quickstart and Faster Resources, it might give you an edge to get a couple extra frigates out or an extra lab up.  Part of the advantage is you free up a slot on the HW so you can do something like jump straight to 3 weapon labs and Illuminators as Advent, or maybe 2 Civic labs, 1 Weapon labs for Corvettes + colonization techs, etc.  -- you get the idea.  And this is assuming you don't plan on building more capships anytime soon.  It is really personal preference, but the advantage is not that big with Quickstart and Faster resources, and of course some people have strategies where they plan to build a 2nd capship relatively quickly.

Thanks a lot for the answers

You do not need to upgrade planet logistics early on when cash income is lowest

I'd say it is a no brainer for eco players to scuttle the cap factory...

For frontliners and suicide, scuttling it can make early culture more viable, but it really depends...some multi-cap strategies are very successful...

As to answer, this is the wrong question. Better question: won't you find yourself at a disadantage when you don't have an extra frigate factory when enemy is raining corvettes or other such ships down on you?

Greg gave the further reasoning: "You do not need to upgrade planet logistics early on when cash income is lowest."

So, the capital factory is scuttled to make room for other stuff, without costing you the logistics upgrade resources.

For me, I *always* scuttle the capital factory, unless I forget, as happens more often than I would like to admit. In eco slot, I want the 4 logistics slot for a civ research center. In fighting spot, I want the 4 logistics slots for a frigate factory.

If I end up surviving long enough in a competitive game to have enough resources to justify a second capital ship, then I will have enough resources for a new capital ship factory. The location of which will be closer to the front line than my capital planet.

You're right, I thought only about the resource benefit, and not about the logistic slots, thanks

Seen so many regulars open with 1 civ lab 1 mil lab as TEC without scuttling capital factory.
Getting stomped in less then 5 minutes because they're going civ tech and they got 1 factory because no logistic slot for 2nd. Getting stomped coz they can only field less then half of the numbers of corvettes their opponent is fielding.

Scuttle cap fac, stick to 2 factories and avoid getting civ labs untill you can do a successfull rush.

Would that advice apply to Advent as well?

I believe it's called the Smurf Stratagem somewhat popular among some of the more skilled players; I believe the main purpose behind this move is to make your opponent underestimate you so you can entrap and destroy him in the future.

I've accidentally killed myself in the dev.exe that way, as I had instant build times on, and apparently that means instant scuttle times too. No chance to undo it. x_x
