Games last way too long. Its the only bad part of the game.
I might be newb but when a game last more than 2 hours is a bit too long for me.
Any tips on rushing??
Nope, the game was designed to be slow and long. Short of playing the small maps with only one AI that is.
Better idea, get a mod. Not trying to plug my own stuff, but my Enhanced 4X Mod has set up the TEC Rebels as a very capable rush faction. If you download the optional minimods, there's ones that make combat faster, and a "deathmatch" mode where income, build and research rates are all much faster.
Just to make sure though, you are playing on faster settings right? Normal settings are quite slow by many people's standard. 
The longer it is, the more I like it. I always play with normal settings.
If it weren't for the memory and cpu limitations of the game, a twenty star system, 10 person game (9 AIs) to go on for months or more if you want it to.
Fun stuff.
Well just winning is pretty easy- winning fast is where the real challenge of the game is. That said, even the "short" games are usually 30-60 minutes.
