Because they're kinda fun.
Yea, I have to agree, though I also used to be slightly disdainful of the concept. Achievements/trophies give an extra bit of playability to most games, adding goals to shoot for outside of simple victory, as well as providing a point of comparison to other players.
In other words, bragging rights. Some folks don't like that idea, but in my experience as a gamer, and a businessman dealing with gamers for way too long, it's all part and parcel. Hand in hand, even. People who enjoy competition, even with an artificial opponent, want, maybe even need a sense of accomplishment outside of simple victory.
I'd even go so far as to suggest that TBS/single player gamers probably appreciate such trappings even moreso than multiplayer gamers, generally speaking.
On that note, I'd like to see achievements for playing as/defeating custom factions, winning with a relatively small number of cities, and winning at each of the difficulty levels, just to name a few.
