Beginners Questions

Hey,

I just bought SoaSE on Steam sale and have some questions. :)

1) Is it normal that battles between fleets take extremely long? Last time for example I had a big ship and about 10 small frigattes. The battle took nearly forever, because the enemy could rebuild single ships faster than I could destroy them...

2) Is there a big gameplay FAQ with tips and tricks?

3) Should you research all the time or only when needed?

4) Are asteroids in general a bad idea to colonize?

5) When should I build Titans?

Thank you very much!

Greetings

1. Not quite, you need more ships of your own to do more damage. Remember that frigates are a good source of this as they are cheaper and have a better DPS per cost.

2. There are many around. On the Steam community site there is a good one by Goafan77 as well.

3. Generally only when needed.

4. Asteroids are great for starting off as they are cheap to build up. Colonize everything.

5. That is a huge debate. Against AI early to mid game is fine but against a human it can get real tricky.

Hey Skyline

The answers to your questions really depend whether you are playing vs AI or a humna opponent/s.

Ryat above is pretty spot on but in general you need a lot more ships and you should be able to make a lot of cheap frigates at any point in the game. I would suggest that you first havea look into how to colonize planets using just one colonizer ship without any military support as it really does make playing experience a lot more enjoyable imo.

well in singleplayer mode you can research more than what Ryat suggested.. Best things to grab are ship types, ice and volcanic colonization, increase of terran population, first two increases of resource extraction (I am sure someone will complaind many of these are not worth it, but I say especially in single player they do worth it..) and to be able to see incoming enemy ships. Hull upgrades are cool with damage increase (but be warned, they need many ships to be effective, like don't increase laser if only 5 ships use that..)

I must say the colonize everything part is a bit wrong (but I know the best thing is to grab all possible planets), if you overextend our empire you will get attacked on multiple fronts and take heavy losses.. I say colonize the planets that you can defend with your fleet!! dont build defense structures only when extremely needed, like a chokepoint planet, and never forget to upgrade the first (first two) population upgrades as they will get rid of underdevelopment taxes. Best to colonize are: asteroids, dwarfs, terran-desert if you can defeat the defenders.., Volcanic and Ice are a bit expensive, but if they have 3-4 resource asteroids grab them fast as they can worth more than a terran or desert.. Your capital ship alone can defeat most defense fleets, only the most guarded terran and desert worlds are troublesome (and assuming you chose a medium or strong capitalship as a starter)

I would say if you are to think about geting your second capital ship (dont build a second one..) and have a decent economy, like 40 credits and 5-10 metal and crystal income.. You need to have a sufficient enough fleet to defend your empire while your titan builds, but you have to decide what is enough. Against higher level AI-s you need to build a starbase or 2 before thinking about titans.. Titan class warships are sometimes game changers, can defeat small-medium fleets alone, sometimes they go down very fast against a significantly bigger fleet..

Thank you very much for the quick replies!

I'll read the steam guide tomorror. I think this will answer most of my questions.

Compared to most RTS games Sins battles take a ridiculously long time. I wouldn't recommend it until you've gotten comfortable with the game, but if you want the battle to go faster I've got a mod that can do that. Changes things up more than you'd think.

One of the big things to remember with sins (and I think it is absolutely awesome) is that regardless of game speed, the DPS for combat stays the same. If you leave the game on normal or slow speed, your actions have greater consequences as often times battles will be over before you can reinforce your units. However, on faster game speeds, it is easier to move your fleets from one side of your empire to the other, though research, income, ship movement etc is much faster and requires greater concentration, different type of strategies, and increased speed of thinking.

Play on Normal speed to get the basics down and then adjust things where you feel you are challenged and are having fun. You have a wide range of players here that like LAN games of Sins on Slow or Normal speed settings where you play a game for 8-15 hours over a single or multiple sessions and you also have the crowd that likes to play the same amount of game-play but in a hour or less.

Either way you end up going, welcome to the great but sometimes dysfunctional family of Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion!
