Capital Ship/ Hero Mod

Relatively new to the Sins community,

I have been playing this game frequently after my recent purchase, and also purchased the add on content most recently as well.

I haven't really gotten the time to explore much of the content, or the vastness of this game in and of itself, and the thought of additional mod content from the community has also peaked my interest.

As stated before I am relatively new to the community, and I thought I would start off by saying that these forums seems to be well organized and managed.

Now for the main point of this post, I am looking for a specific mod, which may or may not exist yet. I am sure many members here have played Warcraft III, and experienced some of the awesome mods the community had created there. I know I probably shouldn't be advertising other games, but this will help me explain what I am looking for.

Some type of Hero/ capital ship game, with massive galaxy where all you control is the Hero/ capital ship. Objectives range from completing missions, exploration, research, to leveling up the hero/ ship.

This would be the type of Mod I am looking for, and I am hoping someone from the community might have the answers I am looking for.

Probably a tall order, but if I weren't a social drinker I wouldn't have asked.

So you want a mod that focuses solely on capital/flagships?

Interesting idea, nobody has yet to do it to my knowledge. Now I don't know how plausible this idea would be for the engine.

You can create Hero like Capital ships yes. They are close enough that it doesn't really take much. After that, the rest of what you ask is not possible.

I think the best label for it would be like Capital Ship RPG.

The object of the game would be controlling the capital ship, and completing missions for like credit on the home world, where assorted upgrades could be researched and developed, or an accompanying fleet built to complete the missions. Expansion would not be the objective, exploration and research, and leveling would be the emphasis.

It is complicated to explain the specifics of what I envisioned since it may not yet been created within this medium of game play.

Also Rovert10 brings up a great point of the game engine compatibility. As I stated I am relatively new to the community, and primarily just started the thread for research purposes, as well as introductions.

SO yes the primary focus would be like a RPG not the RTS intention.

Not possible? The AI is hard coded to need a few types of auxillary frigates like colony frigates, siege frigates, maybe starbase constructors. But beyond that there is no technical reason that would prevent you from removing all combat related frigates and just adding more capitalships.

 

That said TC, I do not believe such a mod currently exists. Part of that is because adding more than 9 capitalships to a faction is a pain, and any more than 13 or so would get excessively so. The Enhanced 4X mod explicitly has hero units, and others like Maelstrom have similar kinds of things, but they have not removed frigates from the game partly because Sins is the kind of game that is really cool to build huge fleets with and partly because most mods don't like to remove depth, though I do see why that kind of simplified play could be fun.

 

Edit: Now that I reread your post, it sounds like you meant only a Single hero ship. There have been jokes about making a Sins Moba before, and in theory it is probably possible as well, but I don't know how well it would really work. A less ambitious but potentially just as fun idea might be just making a custom map where all the player starts with is a titan and dead asteroid. That could be made in Galaxy Forge without any sort of mod.

Wow,

Once again, I would just like to say how pleased I am with the community. Many games I play forums are dead, a post like this quickly slips through the cracks. A pipe dream, maybe in more ways than one if you include the reefer.

At any rate, I would just like to thank anyone who has even shown the remote interest at what was at the core of this post.

If anyone would be interested in workin this out, I have a couple friends who have also made the purchase. Relatively newb at this game, but a solid group none the less. Access to a ventrillo server, among other things to possibly work on this mod.

I think the best way to describe what I am trying to explain would be as stated. One capital ship alone who has access to building more fleets upon mission completions for the resources. I think the rpg aspect may prove to be incompatible with the game engine as was stated but I felt it was worth a shot.

I am interested however in meeting the community, and possibly getting some games together. I can handle constructive criticism.

I do not believe such a mod is impossible at all, to some degree I've done all of the elements that would be required for such a system, though I have no desire personally to remove the RTS Empire aspect from Sins. However, there are two big style limitations that will get in you way that you need to be aware of.

1. Your missions will have to be fairly simple and only start on entering a gravity well. Sins is a Sandbox game and there isn't a scripting engine or anything to do things like check map conditions to do something. However, if you limit your missions to a specific planet, like "Destroy all targets at planet X", you can use Sins' ability system to do what you'd like.

2. The AI will have no idea of how to handle this kind of setup, so that means you'll basically be spawning custom militia groups, which will only hang out at the planet you spawn them at. This means that nothing can really chase the player around, so the player is free to go where he likes with no threat until he enters a planet with a mission.
