Would you buy X360/PS3 now?

I mean, summer 2013 and yeah, i mean 360/PS3, not XB1/PS4.

I was avoiding buying the console for all those years, as i considered it to be expensive, for such a one-trick pony machine. If i felt like spending big over the last few years, i got computer parts or eventually iPhone... the games i really liked - SoaSE, Call of Duties, Pro Evolution Soccer - were avalaible on PC anyway. Except one - NHL game. When i was younger, in the period of 2000-2005, it used to be my most favourite game. I played the shit out of it, but with X360/PS3 launch, they stopped releasing it for PC. You just gotta love Electronic Arts.

Anyway, when these new consoles have been announced, i started seriously thinking about getting one - this time around. 400 EUROs for PS4 is quite a lot, but when i could shell 950 EUROs for CPU before... 

...but then i found out yesterday, the NHL 14 is not coming out for these new consoles... the main reason why i want to buy it. So what to do now? Do i wait another year? I would really like to play the game. And i actually checked the prices for X360/PS3 and the basic version for both is about 150 EUROs. That is indeed nice price, but it feels stupid to buy it, when the new consoles are around the corner....In 2014 fall. there will be most likely NHL for these consoles and what then? 

What would you do in my place? And if decided to buy it, which one would you choose? I am leaning toward PS3, cause of its Blue-Ray capability and bigger memory (12GB compared to 4GB). It is about 20 EUROs more expensive than Xbox, though.

yes.

In this order: Highest --> PS3 --> Xbox360 --> PS4 --> XB1 --> Lowest

I have been VERY unimpressed with the new models. Both are WAY too 'cloudy' and intrusive.

If you aren't planning on getting a PS4 or X1 when they come out but rather a year or two later, then that's 2-3 years you are without a console...maybe that matters, maybe it doesn't...

The fact that 360 and PS3 games will not be compatible with the newer consoles is probably the most important factor...for example, if you are really looking forward to GTA V (which last I checked isn't slated for PC, though that probably will change) then you will need a 360 or PS3...if you don't care about any particular game that's on the older consoles, then I'd say wait 2-3 years and get a PS4 or X1...

We can go back and forth all day long about which systems are/will be better, but console specific games should be considered before anything else...for example, if you are a diehard Halo fan then it's real simple since you can't play Halo on PS (since you don't even own a console I'll assume that particular franchise is not relevant to you)...

you need to read entire OP, not just the name of the topic

I care mostly about NHL. That one is platform agnostic. so to say. But when i think about this now deeper, i was fairly impressed with Last of Us gameplay video and Heavy Rain. those are PS3 exclusives, right?

In regard to next-gen consoles, as there is not going to be NHL14 for it, there is no need for me to buy one of them this year. But i can see myself want to buy the moment NHL 15 comes out for it. In about 15 months.

I did...none of the games you mentioned in the OP were console specific (or even console games)....I brought it up in case there were some you cared about but didn't mention in the OP....as I stated, that should be your determining factor more than anything else....

The question in my mind is how much disposable income do you have?  If a brand new console is coming out and will have a game you expect to enjoy on it AND you've decided you are willing to take the big plunge for that system, then its more cost effective to wait - even more so if you think.  There will be a new version of the games you love ever year most likely.  So, in the long run and if you are going to be really tempted to pick up one of the newer consoles, then I'd wait. That said, you can certainly have a lot of fun picking up a console now (even though they will likely drop in price when the new consoles come out).

I said all that, but here's what I would do if I really wanted to play a game currently - buy the console now.  Pick up one of the new consoles later when whatever game you love is out and has great reviews.  I'd get a PS3 (I own both the 360 and ps3).  I use my blu ray player a ton and watch hulu plus every almost every night before heading off to sleep.  If you've got the money and can pick it up in good conscience, well hey - treat yourself and enjoy!

I didn't get a 360 until Mass Effect came out, and i wasn't interested in the PS3 until God of War 3 (mainly the bundled package of the entire GoW series) came out. Mortal Kombat 9, Metal Gear Solid 4, and the HD package helped that decision too. When i found out damn near every game i liked on a 360 could be played better on a PS 3 i sold the 360, and all of the games.

I probably wont touch the XBox 1 with a 10 foot pole, and the only reason to play a PS 4 would be Metal Gear Solid 5, but that is slated for a ps3 release last i checked. I'll probably wait a year, and see how things go.

Now would be a great time to invest in PS3, because the price will plummet.

Do you think it will get even cheaper? 160 EUROs sounds pretty cheap to me, when compared to 400, but its just the basic version with 12 GB memory instead of HDD. You think once the PS4 hits the shelves, i am going to be able to get the HDD equipped version for this price?

BTW, how does it work without HDD? Is the HDD there just to cut the loading times from the disc, but otherwise non-essential? How many data fits into those 12 gigs of memory? Will it somehow limit me in number of games i can play?

Typically when a new console is released, there is a price drop on the previous system.  In USD, I'd expect like a $50 price drop based on current pricing.  I wouldn't necessarily wait to get it for that.

I had a PS3, got it about 5months after it came out, and it broke in 2010. I then got a 360.

Once the PS4/XB1 come out, I'll buy another PS3 since I expect the price to dip a bit more then.

I've got plenty of games yet that are PS3 exclusive, or games yet to come out. And probably half of the games I'm really looking forward to will be PC ported aswell. Plus with PS4/XB1 being basically PC's but called consoles, porting will be even easier then ever before. Aside from "Exclusives" I'd rather play the games on my super powered computer, as opposed to a hardware limited console with Intrusion/DRM as the primary selling point (XB1).


Of course, if enough incentives arrive I will get a PS4. I however have absolutely no interest in XB1. Hell just yesterday my internet came back after being offline for like 47 hours. Just because I live in Tornado Valley, I would've been SOL for a whole day if I had an XB1. Screw that. XB360/PS3 & PS4 all the way.

Generally speaking, putting the game on the HDD was just for "convenience"...the game ran from the HDD and thus was quieter since you didn't have a spinning disk...I would argue that specifically for the 360, having the game on the HDD was good for the longevity of the system since older 360s had terrible cooling systems...but if you buy a new 360 or new PS3, it doesn't matter for many games...

For some games though it will make a big difference...games with multiple discs may require you to install the 2nd disc on the HDD, and even if they don't it will be more "convenient" not having to swap discs in the middle of a game...additionally, DLC purchased online has to be stored on the HDD and some of the DLCs are big...I've found with the small HDDs that you can't have more than 2 or so game's worth of assets installed at a time without running out of space....you of course can delete DLC and reinstall it later but that is inconvenient...

Personally, I absolutely hate the X-Box controllers so it would be PS3 for me.  Older models of the PS3 are still floating around if you were looking for compatibility with PS1/2.

How about SSD? Would it work? I am thinking that buying the 12 GB version and adding SSD if needed would be perhaps the best choice.

I plan on getting a PS3 at some point, mainly for certain exclusives like Killzone 2 and 3, Starhawk, The Last of Us, Dust 514, and the Uncharted series. I only ended up with an Xbox 360 a few years ago from a friend, but I have become a Halo fan because of it.
