Thinking of buying the game, but have some questions

Hi there I am looking for a good space game for the PC. I use to play Galactic Civilizations and loved it but that was a long time ago hehe. Anyway I like the planet colonization part the most in space games and was wondering how big a part of the game Sins of a Solar Empire is that?

Also if this is the game I am looking for, do I need to buy the original vanilla Sins of a Solar Empire game along with Rebellion(expansion)? I want the most complete experience with all the bells and whistles. Steam only has Rebellion, Forbidden Worlds and Trinity for download. It does not have original game for download for some reason.

Lastly if I download the game from Steam will I get the cool win customization stuff I remember I use to have with Galactic Civ?

Rebellion is a stand alone game that happens to include all the content of vanilla, entrenchment, and diplomacy (collectively known as trinity) except for those intro videos.  So basically, just buy Rebellion, no need for Trinity or the other things piecemeal.

Personally I think the DLC is great, especially for modding purposes....however, it is not necessary to enjoying the game so I'd recommend buying Rebellion and if you find you really like it, buy the DLC later...

Note that the DLC adds new planet types and more interesting planet bonuses...it also adds planet specialization which does impact strategy and planet development...this may be more appealing since you liked the planet colonization part of GC...

As far as the "win customization stuff" I have no idea what you are talking about but I'm thinking no....

TY very much for answering my questions. The win customization stuff I was referring to was Stardock had links or free stuff to customize windows a long time ago. When you bought galactic Civ' you got that stuff with it.

Oh and last thing, The DLC you are referring to is Forbidden Worlds? If so I will buy that too since it is inexpensive and offers more planetary improvements.

Yes, the DLC is Forbidden Worlds....

I think I may understand what you mean with wincustomize stuff....back in the day, you could download Sins Trinity from the Stardock Store or from Impulse (when it was owned by SD) and if you did so you may have had wincustomize stuff appear (I remember I did when SD owned Impulse)...

Since SD doesn't own steam, you won't see any of that this time...

It might be called object dock or something like that. It has stuff to customize windows for pc.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :)

Please allow me to give you a quick history lesson about Sins of a Solar Empire:

  1. Sins of a Solar Empire - Original Game
  2. Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment - First Mini Expansion to Sins of a Solar Empire
  3. Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy - Second Expansion to Sins of a Solar Empire, adds even more content over Entrenchment.

  4. Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion - First Stand Alone Expansion containing everything from above + a ton of new content
  5. Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion FORBIDDEN WORLDS- Small but good DLC for Sins Rebellion only.

Sins of a Solar Empire TRINITY is not a game itself.... it is merely a collection of

  • Sins of a Solar Empire
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy

Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion is the first stand alone expansion, it contains EVERYTHING from all earlier games and is the only thing you normally want to buy! :)

I would also recommend getting the DLC "Forbidden Worlds" for it.... last time I checked it costed only 5 $ which it is well worth imho.

The only drawback is, that unlike TRINITY or Diplomacy.... Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion requires Steam.

Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion short facts: (in no particular order)

  • Excellent developer support
  • Support for up to 10 players (Note: As the game sadly does only support a single CPU core, such games tend to run rather slow, especially with AI)
  • Full LAN support
  • Excellent modability.... and many awesome mods to choose from already
  • Runs on XP, Vista, 7 and probably 8.
  • Epic space panorama
  • much more
  • 3 different races

TEC: The Trader Emergency Coalition was originally created to deal with the Vasari threat. By utilizing their economic power, the TEC have managed to survive by being industrious and adaptive.

Advent: The Advent are a highly advanced civilization that rely heavily on spiritual, psychic and cybernetic technologies. Long ago they were outcast by the Trade Order and so seek to destroy the TEC.

Vasari: A once mighty empire of countless worlds, the Vasari have been travelling for 10,000 years to escape some unknown terror. Now in Trader space, they've been embroiled in a long war.

Play as TEC and use their enormous economy and industrial might to crush your enemies with an armada of highly durable ships. Play as Advent to exact revenge on the TEC for your exile and make your enemies succumb before your mighty synergistic psychic powers. Or play the Vasari.... cunning aliens that use superior technology and dirty tricks that your enemy will never suspect in time.
  • With Rebellion, the tree races split into 6 subfactions, which are defined by special researches and their respective Titans:

    ACTUAL INGAME GRAPHICS!

Colonizing planets is a rather simple thing in Sins of a Solar Empire.... you need a colony ship or a Capital Ship with Colonize ability to found new colonies. Some planet types require research to be done before they can be colonized.

Planet types are different, for example Terrans have high population, Desserts have a ton of logistic slots (needed for space stations needed for research and trade) and Ice have a lot of crystal extractors.

There are several more planets in the game.... the DLC for Rebellion "Forbidden Worlds" adds a few more as well as many new planet bonuses.

Planets need to be developed in various ways.... although that is done with the click of a button.

You dont go down to the planet to build single structures..... you just develop the entire planet from orbit.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a RTS focused 4X game.... the research tree is comparable limited to Gal Civ.... and pounding your enemy into oblivion is usually the best, but not the only way to win. You can win with Diplomacy and Research too.

Diplomacy system is good.... but naturally on a far lower scale than Gal Civ ones.

The best way to befriend other factions? Bomb their enemies back to the stone age. ;P

Planetary Invasions? Not in this game.... and why bother with sending troops when you can just nuke the living shit out of it from orbit anyway?^^

If it does help..... I first played Sins and only later learned about Gal Civ..... I enjoy both games now.

Others will have more info, but imho Sins of a Solar Empire is an awesome space game.

As you come to know Rebellion you will buy the original Sins (in the Trinity collection for instance) because you will want to experience the rich history of this wonderful game.  Turn back now before this game takes your soul...

I don't know if I'd find it worth playing honestly. It's mostly a sandbox game, so regressing would just be taking away features. All you really need to do is watch the original and trinity intro videos if you want the fullest version of the story, but you can watch those on Youtube.  ;)

Welcome to the board!

I think you will notice pretty soon that the Vasari voice acting was kind of... lame.  If you could not stand them, the Vasari Deep Voice mod should help a bit.

Also, if the tech tree sounds too confusing, mabye try the SimpleResearchNames mini-mod in the Trivial Options Mods pack.

The game has a habit of forcing new features on you (eg. getting Rebellion and you cannot play without Titans, getting DLC and you have no options to play without the new contents.)  A few other mini-mods in the above mod pack try to give you the chance to play old-school style, if you somehow wished to do so.  I do not have Trinity, but I think PseudoDiplomacy should be quite close to the original Diplomacy.

My mods were geared towards newbies (such as myself).  Once you have enough of the vanilla game, and want to try out other hardcore mods like E4X, Distant Stars, SOA2, SoGE, etc., well those will be a different world of experience. :-)

I wouldn't assume that everyone, or even most people agree. I do not mind the Vasari voice acting at all (it was their music I couldn't stand). At the least that is an odd thing to plug to someone who has no idea what the Vasari are at this point.

Agreed, Vasari voice acting is fine.
