In the original random maps, players are always spawned at the rim of the star systems, and pirate maps are always near the star. Therefore, you pretty much know where to find them before the game even starts.

The random maps in this pack are based on the original random maps, but the player homeworlds and pirate bases can spawn at any distance from the star, resulting in much more random map layouts that are more similiar to those in traditional 4X games.

A simple idea, but an excellent one nevertheless. Now that I think about it, it's quite odd that Random Maps weren't made like this to begin with. Any chance of making a "Fair" variation as well (which would be quite difficult, seeing as pirates will always be much closer to some people than to others)?

Yeah, I think it is a trade off between randomness and fairness.  Stereotypical 4X random maps tend to be unfair (eg. that was why Galciv2 has a Ctrl-N hotkey), and for me, part of the charm was to see how each player got (man-)handled by the loveless RNG.  :D  I guess the original random maps are made the way it was in order to provide relatively fair and symmetrical setups for the normal RTS MP crowds.
