I have no doubt that there will be people who insist that it's not Star Control without the Ur-Quan in them. I suppose those people could just sit on their hands for another 25 years while the rest of us play the new Star Control.
Hear hear. Spoken far more diplomatically than I would have done.
I find this trend of dismissing the idea of a new path for the story to be tiresome, as though Stardock is going to acquiesce and proceed to interpret TFB's story their way. The sad thing is this will inevitably play out ad nauseum as the game gains more publicity and more people chime in with these remarks about it not being canon because it isn't the Ur-Quan timeline.
I've been with the franchise since the very beginning, and even I can admit that taking things in a new direction will probably help the series more than hurt it. The decision to leave the established narrative alone is a good one for a number of reasons. One need only look at what happened with SC3: another team took the reins and attempted to steer what Paul and Fred had created, and were almost universally panned for it. While I enjoyed the some of the characterizations and found the dialog and voice acting pretty fun, the narrative was a bit stale, and this was despite the loss of the sense of adventure too. The plot played like a clip show episode where everything felt like recycled excerpts from previous episodes.
Also, the idea that this new series will heavily feature DLC expansions opens up the potential for anyone to create their own content. With the suggestions Paul has made in the past, it doesn't surprise me to hear he hasn't disregarded the possibility of being involved at some point in the future, and given the distribution framework for future entries in the series, subsequent chapters could probably be developed as add-ons, whether by Stardock or other developers, so it's not an impossibility that Toys For Bob could collaborate on a followup chapter to their storyline someday. I kind of get the sense now that Stardock is developing the title with this idea in mind all along.
I'm sincerely more excited by the idea of a whole new adventure rather than a retread or extension of what we already know. That's what I loved about SC2 in the first place; everything was genuinely unknown and I didn't know what I'd find journeying into deep space. The idea of having that sense of mystery and adventure back again is terrific.
