Changing Star names

I read a couple of posts on this and it didn't sound hard so I opened up the steam app files and went to the GCIII text file and found the XML for star names Backed up the originals and started slashing and burning afer about an hour of that I got tired of doing it so I saved and closed the files

I never had any doubt it would work since I have dealt with XML files extensively with another game (Making History).

The next time I started GCIII and got a white error dialogue that said something about ignore, run anyway and attach to clip boardafter trying a couple of the options I gave up and replaced the original file. All is well except for my wasted effort.

I suppose I messed up an XML file and STP or could it be something else? Does it sound like I was in the right file or does all this need to be in some kind of mod file?

When I was modding the Making History game I was using an XML editor that would not let me make an error and my current computer does not have that app. I didn't buy it so it must have been on board when I bought the computer. Any suggestions for an app?

When you changed the star names in the text file did you change the name reference and if so did you update the files that contain those references? If not that is probably the issue the references other files are using no longer appear in the text lookup file.

for example in this one;

<Label>RANDOM_STAR_NAME_0</Label>
  <String>Albireo</String>

Did you just change what was in the <String></String> tag or did you also change the content of the <Label> tags, The label tag is the name of the string that other files provide so the game can look the contents up in the text file, so if you change that other files will contain broken references.

Just an idea.

All I changed was the string. Albireo to Albert for instance in your example. Is that not sufficient?

If that should work I assume I accidently messed something up in the many that I changed.

The program that I worked with before would not let you save a problem

Being able to rename stars in-game is a polish point that is coming eventually, according to last weeks stream.
