Hey,

I don't know if it will answer your question but for me, the easiest way would be to start the game, create a faction and look at the home systems list. I think they are always made of 1 or 2 planets cumulating 16 "quality".

Your reasoning is sound my friend but unfortunetly I don't have the game yet. I'm saving for a new PC build atm so its going to be at least a couple more months.

However the wait is killing me so I'm spemding some of the time by planning the custom races I'm going to play as/against/share - I've got about 30 so far, but to put the cherry on them all I need to decide what home system to give them.

Any chance I can impose on you to post the different options?

Sol - planets class 11 and 5

Drengia - class 11 and 5

Altaris - class 10 and 6

Iridii - class 12 and 4

Icos - class 16

Kryseth - class 8, 4, and 4

Iconis - class 13 and 3

Thalis - class 16

Arb - class 16

Abbydos - no habitable planets

Serenity - one class 12 with bonus to tourism and approval

You're not the only one who has to wait. I'm in the same boat, and, like you, planning ahead , and... exploiting my creations from GC2. +1 to you for asking for info.

Really looking forward to getting stuck in, my only little niggle is learning how to mod from scratch - I'm having very little joy finding clear, jargon busting, explain it to me like Im a 5 year old advice/how-to-guides.

But you made me realise that I can practice modding on galciv2! Never even occurred to me!

Oh yes, LeoncitoGB! Practice with GC2 is an excellent way to gain some familiarity with xml modding, and also for learning to add basic static art. For adding pics I cropped images from Google using MS Paint and saved the art as png files using the same pixel dimensions the official game used. For xml work I used Notepad to edit copies of xml files; a simple text editor avoids invisible characters and format functions from messing up the xml you compose.

Playing with GC2 will also help with gaining a holistic view of how the game files are organized. Of course GC III will have differences, but toying GC2 will build some confidence.

My main concern is the terrible thought of completely screwing the game up, however, I heard that if you purchase through Steam you can simply uninstall and then reinstall the original - is that correct as far as you know?

When I get started on Galciv 3 I'm just going to pace myself, choose one of my planned out custom races and take it one mod at a time - first static art, then up the race traits points to 8 (I don't think 5 is enough), then ship designs and so on.

It doesn't even have to be as involved as that - you can tell Steam to "Verify local cache files" and it will validate your game files and download and reinstall any that are missing or damaged (i.e. changed, perhaps by you). But yes, you can certainly uninstall and reinstall.

I believe so; we create an account at Steam and buy the game. Steam records our legitimate access to the game so if ever things blow up on our PC, we can download a new installation - and, as an added bonus, it will be an updated version too.

There is only one thing you need to know when choosing home system...

Iridii - class 12 and 4

Let's just say that all class 12 planets are not equal when it comes to terraforming potential (although I haven't tried all of them yet, but doubt any could be better than Iridii).

I made a custom race using the 0 quality planet, with the back story that they had to leave their worthless planet.

LOL, they do not cooperate. When playing against them as an AI, they colonize other planets, but continue to occupy the pos planet and the population is maxed out.

That's good to know but tbh I always play as version of the Humans so when I play it's gotta be the Sol System. If I'm feeling Benevolent I play as a future extrapolation of the books from The Western Awakening Trilogy http://tamariel.com/ . If I'm feeling evil, and I mean EEEEEVIIIILLL, I play as S.M.Stirling's Draka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Domination . And if I'm feeling whimsical I play as the British Star Empire - well I can dream can't I? Lol

I'll make sure I give Iridii to my favourite custom race adversary!
