Economy during wartime

How do you regulate your economy during wartime? I was doing just great, then another civ declared war on me and I was holding just fine - no problems - but my entire economy and morale went to hell. I mean how am I supposed to build up a fleet to defend when the people won't even produce money or ships?

I need advice on dealing with wartime...

Well, if I'm reading your post right, the reason your morale went to crap is you wound up on the receiving end of a war and didn't already have defenses in place. People tend to look poorly upon being left defenseless while the enemy runs amok in their territory. The hindsight answer is to shift more spending to military if you find yourself falling behind. In terms of keeping yourself out of trouble I think it's important to look to the military first, social issues second, and tech is last.

In your situation, the best you're going to be able to do is shift 100% of your spending into military to get defensive units as quickly as possible. Then try to find the best sweet spot for taxes and adjust your gov't spending downward until you're not going to completely crash economically.

If you can get defenders and start to drive them back, the morale will raise again.

That's the weird thing - I had plenty of defense - they couldn't break through. Morale and productivity went to crap tho...

Sounds like they attacked you with some destabilization as well.

also you lose any trade you had with that race. even races that hate you usually have a trade route or two with you.

To help safeguard your trade routes, try to trade with the minors before a major that you may have future conflict with. ;)
