I havent played the game since pre-Crusade.

How do special resources work now? Do you just accumulate them like money and buildings and weapons only take them from a stockpile?

How does population relate to planet production? If I have a planet set for research, should I use tiles for more population or more science buildings, what would be more effective in the long run?

Special resources are accumulated on starbases, and planets. Used similar to before except there used for most things some need more than one. Population grows 1/10 slower, so research is immidiately better. Eventually after many turns you can build a city. Your population will not exceed you planet class. One production point per person, this can increased through terriforming the planet class. I would recommend building asteroid mines instead to increase production.

Alright, what I meant about the special resources was if they were accumulated now instead of being static. The last time I played if you had a starbase mining two Thulium nodes you would only have 2 Thulium available for using in buildings or other items, and if you used them up you had to expand to get more or research better mining techs.

It looks like now they accumulate, so 2 Thulium nodes gives you 0.2 Thulium/turn and creates a stock pile for you to use for various buildings and items. I like this change alot better then before.

How do you change a population's pictures? I created a synthetic empire using the Yor picture and backgrounds, however while I am playing the game I got my first citizen and it had a picture of a human female not a robot, is there something I missed in creating the race?

When using the faction editor there is a button for customizing citizen portraits.
