IMPORTANT! Re: Wallpaper rejections

IMPORTANT! Re: Wallpaper rejections

Much of this message board is becoming redundant. Almost a month ago I posted a thread about skin requests and their various evils in an attempt to cull a lot of the repetition and cloggin up of the board with almost identical threads. It seemed to work to some extent, although we still get the requests for Barbie and Chevvy Chase skins on almost a daily basis.

Now it's time to deal with a second pet hate I have on these boards - the multitude of people complaining about their wallpapers being rejected. I understand that each of these individuals take a great deal of pride in their 'work', and the lack of a reason for its rejection stings somewhat, but do we really need an individual thread for each and every wallpaper rejected?

Here are some things to remember.

1. Why has my wallpaper been rejected, and yet I haven't been given a reason for this cruel and unusual punishment?

When we first had the wallpaper section here at WinCustomize, each wallpaper was treated with the utmost respect, and those which didn't make the grade were rejected through the use of a personal e-mail detailing the reasons and some suggestions for improvements.

This approach worked for all of about 20 minutes. Within moments, the moderators responsible for rejecting wallpapers started to receive angry, and in many cases obscenely abusive, replies to their comments from the wallpaper creators. Not everyone responded in this way, but enough did to warrant taking another look at the procedures.

Now remember that these moderators are volunteers, and that they get nothing out of doing this job aside from the pleasure of maintaining one of the best collections of desktop customizations on the Internet. It was therefore decided that they didn't deserve to get this kind of abuse from disgruntled wallpaper artists on a daily basis. The e-mailing process was stopped, and wallpapers were simply accepted or rejected without comment.

This was perhaps unfortunate for those artists who found the criticism to be genuinely helpful, but this lack of feedback was deemed to be more acceptable than the constant harassment of the moderators by those less willing to have their egos bruised.

To get an idea of the severity of responses received by moderators during that dark period, they included such gems as personal insults, racism, and in some cases death threats. I think you'll therefore understand why we have the system we do now.

2. Starting threads to get a second opinion from the general public.

A large percentage of the threads started on the board are by artists who have had their work rejected and want other users to back them up in their fight for justice. Don't do it.

If your work has been rejected, you're not doing yourself any favours by trying to bypass the moderators. You're only giving yourself a bad name and drawing attention to yourself. This could impact negatively on your future submissions.

Posting your rejected wallpapers in a public forum opens you up to exactly the kind of criticism you probably won't want to hear. You're likely to receive some very harsh critiques, and end up feeling a lot worse about yourself and your work than you did when it was simply rejected.

While it's true that you may get one or two positive comments, what you are effectively doing is parading a known sub-standard piece of work in front of the harshest bunch of critics known to man - the public. You're unlikely to get any genuinely helpful advice, especially if your thread is the 100th one of the week complaining about the unfairness of the moderation process.

If you honestly believe that your work was of a high enough standard to get accepted, then e-mail a site admin and get them to take another look at it. Don't just re-submit it, or try to generate support in the public forums.

3. Uploading a rejected wallpaper as a desktop screenshot.

If your wallpaper doesn't get through, it's often tempting to simply upload it to the screenshots section. This section has less moderation than the wallpapers one, and is used to show off your current desktop customizations to other users.

While it's fine to upload a screenshot with your wallpaper as a background, the screenshot cannot be useable as a wallpaper itself. You must obscure the image with windows, icons and other items so that you're not just using the section as another distribution outlet for your work.

If you are found to be doing this knowingly, a very dim view will be taken by the site admins. You may have certain priviledges revoked, and your experience of the site will be heavily limited.

4. Helpful information.

If you need more advice about wallpaper submissions, it's a good idea to take a look at the site's submission guidelines. These can be read here: https://www.wincustomize.com/guidelines.asp

If you feel you have a strong enough case for your wallpaper being re-evaluated, contact one of the admins by e-mail. Some useful e-mail addresses can be found here: https://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?Cmd=about#rule

Above all, remember that to succeed in this 'business', you need to be your own harshest critic. Before submitting your work, take a long hard look at it and try to decide whether it will be something that other users of the site will want to have on their desktop.

Take a look around the wallpaper section and try to get an idea of the sorts of things people like. Look at ratings and download counts for wallpapers of a similar genre to yours, and decide whether you should upload your wallpaper or simply keep it for yourself and work harder on your next effort.

Sounds good man. It's a big bad world out there and part of it is to take a rejected wall and go back to the drawing table and make a better one.

I just uploaded a couple of walls I made in paint a few days ago. From the incredible quality of the artwork I see here daily, I doubt that mine will be accepted although there might be a slim chance

I think it all comes down to: If you make a wall and you think someone else might like to have it, there's no harm in trying to submit it here. If it doesn't meet the quality standards of the moderators, you can always offer to email your wall to your friends...

I don't see it as a personal rejection, I see the moderation as a crucial part of keeping Wincustomize dedicated to quality workmanship...that doesn't mean the work you submit isn't good....it just might not be what they think would work here or be of great interest to the many many (many many) members...I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to navigate a site that is bulging at the seams with walls that nobody uploads...I also can't imagine how much it would cost to maintain such a mammoth site....

I intend to keep trying although my attempts pale in comparison with the beautiful artwork I see...who knows...maybe one once in a while will be interesting enough to offer to the hungry masses

Good Thread GrayHaze I've been reading it for a while now

Hiya footsie

Yeah due to the volume of wallpapers WC gets, walls that would post on other sites sometimes won't make it here, though they did relax things a bit a little while back. Whether or not they get accepted here, try posting at one of the growing skinning sites, like Skinartistry http://skinartistry.com/index.php (Hint Hint )

My main gripe with rejected wallpapers, is not that mine have been rejected, No problem there. I have seen things here that far surpass what I am doing. But how the duece does a person LEARN to do any better? I have searched for someone to share a few hints with me and no one wats to share any knowledge or share where to obtain the knowledge! I'll gladly learn, but i have to know where the resources are!

LordCobalt >> Try uploading some of your work at http://www.deviantart.com . Whereas this site is intended more as a collection of high-quality completed work, DeviantArt tends to be a good place to upload 'in-progress' work and get feedback from other artists. Just don't expect the feedback to always be of the constructive variety.

That's the truth..

Hi Essencay and all...

I suppose I've steeled my resolve to at least try...I suppose the only real pain will be in my ego...and that's mendable

Thanks!

Sir grayhaze,
I have uploaded at Deviant Art and received a great response to my submissions there, which still leaves at square one as far as knowing how to improve anything. I know that there is room for improvement. There is no debate there. I also know that my stuff is not the worst stuff out there by a long shot. So I know a little about what I'm doing. I've seen tutorials out the wazoo covering all sorts of manipulations and graphics, EXCEPT what I want to learn. If I knew where to go, (and a few people have told me that...although it wasn't the place I was hoping...) I'd be happy to do the necessary study. This seems to be almost like a clique that one is either a member of, or is never allowed to join. I'm on the outside looking in.

LordCobalt....essentially there are two tenets regarding wallpapers and the wallpaper section here.

First and foremost....the section is intended for wallpapers, not art.  There is often a difference.

Second....Wincustomize.com is a SKINNING site.....walls are an adjunct to the skin sections ONLY, as there are literally millions of sites catering to walls specifically.  This means many submitted here will be rejected to keep the section relatively manageable.

If you wish feedback regarding a submissions potential 'improvement' for acceptance just email me with the name of the submission and I'll comment...

i dont mind rejections, but i wish they would come up with away 2 tell how 2 improve my work, or any1 else, guessing at whats wrong is just not good.

There are too many submission to offer a critique on every rejection. In addition, some people don't take kindly to rejection!

As Jafo says, an e-mail to a moderator asking for feedback is the best way. Genuine (polite) requests will always receive attention.

Why dont you just put my wallpaper pack up?! Ive spent hours on it, made it better because it was rejected, and yet, still rejected! Is it that bad?

Rejected for being a 5-second chrome filter in blue...

That was well put. If these people are that shallow to send threatening e-mails, and get 'nasty' about their work being rejected, then they are the kind of people that I do not want to support, or have any of their work. I think the system is as it should be. This should be the first thing one sees when uploading their work.

did my submission get rejected or something. i submitted a wallpaper a week ago and i got no confirmation in my email of a rejection or anything.
Hiya alphasol.....due to the volume of wallpapers submitted here, no one gets a confirmation of rejection by email. If you check "My Skins" link at the top of the page, you see which of your skins/walls are awaiting approval or accepted and in the library. Anything submitted and no longer in your "My Skins" page has not been accepted

Not for wallpapers...

Wow, this is a long discussion ) I can see both sides of the issue here. However, if there was some way for a person to know that their submission was rejected vs. not-been-looked-at-yet it would not keep one in a limbo. If all submissions are reviewed within 5 days, no exceptions, then if your work does not show up here within that time, then you would know that it was definately rejected. However, if it was possible, if a flag or short message could show up when one logs in to this site, one would not have to necesarily bother the moderators with emails asking if his/her submission was rejected or not, and why. Having said that, I'm not sure if the 5-day rule applies here all the time or not. If it does not, I would appreciate an email from a moderator lettimg me know if my last submission was rejected. Any comment as to the reason would be a plus. Just like to know if I can move on, sort of speak.
I appreciated the feedback last time my work was rejected - too many XP wallpapers ) Now I know not to waste my or anyone else's time making more XP wallpapers.

Thanks

Personally, I don't need to stare at a wallpaper telling me that my system is XP. I mean Duh. I can see that for three seconds when I boot up and that is long enough for me. In fact it is too long. I want a faster boot up. If I see that logo for 0.5 seconds then I am much happier. I'd rather see a beautiful landscape on my desktop. How about a beautifull landscape with an XP logo? You think about it. Ugh. I guess the Monalisa would look better with a XP logo. Not. It's like having an XP logo on your forehead.

Please, no more XP logos.
