Remove mouse hover selecting windows behaviour

Hello, I really want to try and buy Alt Tabby. First I tried the free version and I really like everything about it. The only thing that bothers me, is when Alt tabbing and then moving the mouse. When hovering over a preview of a window it gets automatically selected. In default win11 alt tab menu, that only happens after a click. Is it possible to change that behaviour?
Thanks!

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I can't reproduce your issue, perhaps if I know which AltTabby style interface you're currently using? Also, few extra details would also help.

  1. Windows full version and OS Build number.
  2. Alt Tabby version number installed.
  3. Post a video showing us your issue might help us understand it better.

Thank you,

Hello,

thanks for your quick reply. I am using the Thumbnail View.
1) Win11 23H2 (maybe I do need a newer one, I'm still on such a old version because 23H2 still has the old alt tab legacy menu, got removed in the newer versions)
2) 0.7
3) There is the video: https://streamable.com/gai8nt
I showed actually 2 problems.
First: When hovering over a preview in alt tab, that window gets focused. I don't want this. When alt tabbing, most of the times I still move my mouse but in default win11 alt tab that doesnt have influence.
Second problem is when having 6 windows open, then there is a big gap between them? Why is that the case?

Thank you!

Rows and columns are configurable, and that is where I would start on the gap you get with six windows open. Our announcement for the beta lists configurable rows and columns among the customization options, so the layout you are looking at is not the only one on offer.

The hover behaviour I cannot give you a setting for. Nothing we have published documents a way to stop a preview being selected when the mouse passes over it, and I would rather say that than point you at a toggle I cannot find.

On the Windows build, nothing we have published ties either of those behaviours to 23H2. I would not upgrade hoping to fix them, particularly given the reason you are staying on it.

Since you are weighing up buying it, 0.7 is an open beta. If hover-to-select is the thing that decides it for you, test it before you pay rather than counting on it being configurable today.

I see this behavior in Thumbnail view, but not in Carousel View. Currently, I believe there is no option for it to turn off that auto select part. I have forwarded your request to the Stardock Support Team for their review and recommendations. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We really do appreciate your feedback,

Thanks

Thank you guys! Really appreciate the support.

Once there is a dedicated toggle for this I will buy AltTabby instantly! :)

Thanks!

You can achieve what you are asking for with a custom hotkey. Make sure "Stay open (sticky)" is On.

For me that won't change anything, you can still hover over the previews and they are get highlighted like in the video

Looking into the details here, it seems a slight discrepancy is due to how the default Windows 11 alt+tab menu treats app selection, versus how Alt Tabby does.

For most view modes (excluding Carousel, as basj mentioned), AltTabby will indeed select and highlight whichever tab the mouse hovers over. This part seems natural, as I think you may expect some recognition of the mouse hovering over an app from the Alt Tabby menu.

The issue then becomes, as I understand:  If the menu is not pinned/stickied, that app's window will open with the release of your alt+tab menu.  I understand that would not happen with a default Win11 alt tab menu.

With this considered, I have logged this difference:

  • Internal reference: ODNT-12565

However, please consider as this gets looked at, we have offered a workaround for the difference in behavior:

When AltTabby's alt+tab menu has the "Always pinned" / "Keep open (sticky)" feature turned on, the currently hovered-over / selected / highlighted app will not open until you actually click it.

If you have further thoughts on why this workaround isn't suitable, or can elaborate on what exactly the issue is, we'll be happy to add that feedback to the report.

I don't think I described my problem clearly enough. Here is the situation:

Standard Windows 11 Alt-Tab behavior: When you are in the overview, you can cycle through the windows using the Tab key; hovering the mouse over a window has no effect unless you click on it (which brings it into focus). Simply hovering over a window does not select it.

AltTabby works similarly, except that hovering the mouse over a window selects it, which messes up my tabbing. If I know I need to press Tab three times, but I accidentally hover over a window, I end up somewhere different after those three presses than I would have otherwise. That is exactly the problem.

I don't understand why "Keep open (sticky)" feature turned on doesn't solve that issue. It may not be exactly the same as the Windows default Alt + Tab, but it will stop you from accidentally going somewhere you didn't intend to go.

Where do I find "Keep open (sticky)" setting. Is is under hotkeys like you described earlier with the screenshots?
When then pressing Win + # the mouse can still focus the window I hovered

It can be found from the Style tab of the Configuration UI, as Pelaird mentioned.

Or (depending on your switcher selected) look for the pin icon when using the menu:

Windows default Alt + Tab focuses the app you are hovering over it. It just doesn't show a selection box around it. If you look closely, the title bar of the app hovered over changes to a lighter shade and the close (X) appears on the thumbnail.

I am sorry but even when I click on the "Keep open (sticky)" button its still the same. The X is always there as well as the selection border around it no matter if the setting is enabled or disabled

Yes, there is still a selection border, we expect that.  The detail we're looking for is how/what exactly is problematic?

The Sticky as a workaround should prevent the window from actually opening, unless you commit to opening it by clicking or pressing Enter on your keyboard.  Does that make sense/work for you?

...but nothing changes until you click an app! I really don't understand why you don't see this. Please bear in mind that AltTabby was designed to be different; not to be exactly the same as the default Windows Alt + Tab.
