LCD Monitors

I have a Dell 19" LCD monitor and i cannot play Gal Civ on it since it doesnt resize properly. I cant even get it to play in the smaller window with help from the Stardock people. I have tried every permutation of display resolutions and adjustments.

Is there any hope that a patch will be forthcoming to allow play on LCD monitors?

I'm gathering that your monitor is designed for a hihger resolution and is stretching (with much garbling) the display to fit? If this is the case there is most likely a setting somewhere to disable stretching and let you play below-optimum resolutions in a letterbox format. Keep looking, it's probably in there somewhere.

I have an LCD at work - they're great, but not for gaming because most are fixed resolution. I reckon kryo is right, and dont forget to check the website of the monitor manufacturer, because there are bound to be other users of your monitor that have struck the same problem. The manufacturer's support/help desk should be able to sort you out. Good luck with it! :)

I play on a laptop and it worked just fine. BTW, since you seem to be evil, why don't you join us at the Evil Empire.

Nand1 - I think it's the resolution that's the issue. My 15inch work LCD operates at 1024x768, and I believe most laptop LCDs operate at that resolution (being small screens). I think kryo's point is that a large 19 inch monitor is likely to have a higher native resolution (outside the usual GalCiv specifications).

Ungerpup - dont listen to Nand1, either. Those evil empire guys tend to smile at you, then step around and stab you in the

If we can't reproduce the problem, we can't fix it, and Gal Civ works fine on all the LCD monitors and laptops here.

Ungerpup: what happens when you run it in windowed mode at a resolution higher than 1024x768?  (Still has to be 16 bit color though).  Does debug.err report any errors?

Im certain it is because the native resolution for my LARGE lcd screen is higher than the game (1600/1200 probably). The screen edges are "cut off" and exist outside the framework of the screen. What is actually on the screen looks fine, but i only have access to about 80% of the screen and the outer edges are cut off.

I get overt failure when i try to play in windowed mode and changing the screnn resolutions or playing in any of the other color modes doesnt seem to help either; ive tried every permutation and i think the game "resets" it back to the native resolution for the game anyway upon entering.

I'm sure the there is no problem on smaller LCD monitors that have lower resolutions than the game or equal ones.

I have a Dell 18" at work, with a 128 MB GeForce Ti4200 using the DVI connector. Dell has their monitors manufactured by other people, so the different models are not necessarily comparable. Mine is made by LG (the former Lucky-Goldstar in S. Korea). It has 1280x1024 pixels. The 19" has the same number of pixels, as far as I know. The Dell 20" has a 1600x1200 screen.

I've run GalCiv v1.1 full screen on the 18" (just for a few minutes - I haven't played it at work in a while). If the resolution of the input signal is not 1280x1024, the monitor is responsible for scaling the image, which introduces fuzziness; other than that, it has always worked fine for me.

So, GalCiv does work with LCD monitors of your size. Furthermore, I'd say any issues are related to your video card and/or monitor since they are responsible for showing images of any size.

LCD monitors require a 60Hz refresh rate. Since the game is probably running at a different resolution from your desktop, you need to make sure that that resolution is set to 60Hz on your machine. This can be a real pain - you may need to download some third-party utility to get this done. Also, make sure you have installed the monitor "driver", an INF file that describes the capabilities of the monitor. Windows Update may supply such a thing.

We've recently purchased a 19" CR monitor and are having the same problem with GC, WC3 (Frozen Thrown), and Sim City 3000 . . . the exact make/model is an ImageQuest Q910 (by Hyundai . . . mmm I thought they only made motor bikes and small cars?)

Here's a link to some info on video cards and their DVI compliance/performance...

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/

You may find something that will help. nVidia based cards are not known for their stellar performance on DVI apparently.

Humm... Apparently the borad s/w doesn't like commas in the url. Click the link then add the following and it'll take you to the article. article2/0,3973,1370500,00.asp
