Random or Not?

I just started playing this game and am still figuring out what I can and cant do. Anyway, yesterday I was playing and got a message that the Altarian leader(forget his name)was assasinated while working on negotiations on a planet that does not even belong to me. The Altarians have declared war on me. Have I done something wrong? I have been at peace with the Altarians the entire game , had close relationship with them, and have two or three very long trade routes going to them. Is this someone getting their moneys worth for destabilizing me, and if so can I figure out who? Is this just a random event because we are the two most powerful militaries in the game at this point? Please help...Also the message said he was killed by a disgruntled employee, not to mention it was not even my planet he was assasinated on...

Well from the events that have occured to me that one sounds like it was a member of your own delegation, and you were on one of their planets, not yours. It is always good to really read those closely when they pop up.

How to avoid these problems is to spend Espionage money under the Relations screen.
That however does not make you immune. I have always invested money as soon as making contact with each and every alien(since getting burned my first time) but it still happens that some DOH-HOLE I take with me to set up a deal shoots some poor ambassador and war soon follows.

It even happens between the aliens races. I have had rather strong and troublesome Alliances broken by it. Thanks be to the code for those ones.

My advice, spend money and hope for the best. It does appear random, how random seems top depend on how much you have invested in espionage and how soon you invested it.

First, you have a very disturbing nickname... LOL

What you have just had happen to you is random, but avoidable. You need to spend some BCs on espionage, which will prevent various bad things from happening to you. Unfortunately for you, if the Altarians have a large military they are unlikely to want to sign a peace treaty with you.

Espionage is not just learning what your neighbors are capable of, so you should consider investing at least a small amount in it.

This is one of the random Events that can occur in the game. It has happened to me in each of the last 4 games I've played and, given the amount I spend on espionage, I don't think that espionage spending has any effect on the Event probability. :(

Personally, I think I'm going to rewrite the Event text. The idea that some nut with a wrench and a grudge can take out the heavily guarded leader of one of the galaxy's most powerful civilizations just makes me cringe. ;p (I don't mind being forced into a war with an ally as the result of some unforeseen, random event, I just want to be able to believe the event COULD actually occur.)

Espionage prevents the ambassador mishap event: You have to get the first level of espionage in order to avoid the event. I'm not sure about the disgruntled worker one. The ambassador event says how it could have been prevented in the text. Waht does the worker event say?

I have no problems believing what "one nut" can be capable of. Just look at our own history and recent events. A dedicated "nut" or zealot can do quite a bit of damage!

I am glad I saw this post as this just happened to me last night. I am new to GalCiv (2 weeks now) and am still getting used to it. This is a great game!

@HairyTheTaco: I am working on joining your empire :) So far over 100 million people have been sent to mine (and die) in some dangerous places all for some extra cash.... Where do I go to see how evil I am getting?

Go to the screen which has the sliders for your taxes, spending, etc and click on the Society tab. It will bring up a display of your alignment.
