SmartException/MCP problems?

Hi,
If any of you are having problems after installing the .66b build, please check the date and time of the MCP/Smartexception files in your Program Files\Common Files\Stardock\SmartException directory. They should be:

07/22/2002 09:52 AM 53,760 MCPClient.dll
07/22/2002 09:52 AM 59,904 MCPServer.exe
07/22/2002 09:54 AM 122,880 SmartEx.exe
07/22/2002 09:53 AM 83,968 SmartEx.dll

If the dates do not match, delete these files and reinstall .66b. If the dates do match and you are still having issues, please send me email me([email protected])
Thanks,
Ian

This morning I was able to find the 9x crash issue(related to the same code as the earlier problems, dealing with MCP's RPC stuff). Please download the updated code from http://www.stardock.com/temp/mcprefresh.zip and extract to your program files\common files\stardock\smartexception directory. You may need to unload mcpserver.exe first(note that you won't see it in the task list on 9x). To unload the mpcserver, simply bring up a dos prompt, navigate to your program files\common files\stardock\smartexception directory, and run mcpserver.exe -unload. These updates should also appear in the next dgm update.

Has anyone been able to install Ian's update to SE? I have followed the above instructions and can NOT get it to work. The operating system seems to have SmartException.exe in use, which has two of the other files tied up. Somewhere there has to be someone that knows how SE gets designated to the OS as a startup program and the commands for removing this status.

Cheers,
Jack

I finally managed to unhook these files, but I am not sure what worked. I found a program that comes with Windows ME called "regedit". There, I found regiestrations for Stardock, Drengin.net, etc.. Is there anything here that could be preventing me from getting this thing from working? I see these registrations under in at least two places - "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" -> "Software" and "HKEY_USER" -> "DEFAULT" -> "Software".

Thanks,
Jack

The app below is the one I used to disable the errant Smartexception.

There are many different avenues for a program to load at startup and one of the apps that I have found for finding them all is a nifty little free-standing app called "Startup Control Panel".

It works on any version of Windows newer than 3.1.

Another option is to rename the existing files, copy the new ones in, and then reboot.

I've installed and will see next reboot.
Many thanks to magus for the Startup utility link.
Really a nice piece of code.
Hope will not steal my GC tactics LOL

Thanks, Magus, for that utility. Cleared out the two GC-related processes that weren't working as well as another that I didn't want. :D

But do you get a report when GalCiv crashes? And does SE show up in the right part of the desktop tool bar?
