Virtual Desktop 1.99d(rc).002 - cannot add more than 3 desktops

Virtual Desktop 1.99d(rc).002 - cannot add more than 3 desktops

Does anyone one else have this problem with the latest beta? Have done an uninstall/reboot etc.

3 desktops is better than only one, but is not really enough!

Windows XP Pro + SP2 + latest hotfixes.

Cheers, Kent

I'm getting all the desktops to show now for each desktop and as mini's...although I don't know if having 10 desktops and 10 backgrounds loaded is good since the explorer.exe size in Task Manager has gone up considerably.

Jeff:
SVD used to be available as an option in Right Click to add to a menu. Should that still be the case? I don't have the ability to add it any longer. Would it be possible to add SVD to ObjectDock+ in the future?

Thanks for taking care of the current issues that we were having!

Hi cmuggle,

Actually, for various reasons the decision was made to not include Virtual Desktops as an option within RightClick. We are planning on having a docklet to control an already-open copy of the virtual desktops (e.g. if you have it open in the windows taskbar or in ObjectBar already), but it will only be able to switch between desktops and show you which desktop you're on, not show replicas mini-walls etc etc like in the toolbar-version.

Hi Jeff,
What I meant was not using custom wallpaper bitmaps as "mini" images. Your fix worked. Thanks.

Hey Jeff ... I'm sure you are sick of the obvious by now but just to let you know the patch worked for me. Thanks so much.

The patch also worked here, however...

I have an OD+ dock containing 6 SysStats docklets two of which are Judge's excellent world clocks (see: http://sysstats.needlemen.com/details.php?id=60). Now, one of the configuration options of this docklet is if you CTRL+LeftClick is brings up a dialog to set the locale.

What's this have to do with BandVWM? Well, whenever I change desktops (regardless of whether by hotkey or mouse click) both those SysStats docklets responded to their CTRL+RightClick event! It was also regardless of which application had focus at the time.

[Edited]
I'm not even able to work around it by reconfiguring the docklets to respond to another click+key combination, they respond nevertheless - moreover there's 2 of the dialogs opened for each docklet.

I thought it could be a sleeper waiting to go off in other applications also...

Yay!!! Your patch fixed my freezing problem and also the refresh/repaint issue I had. I thought maybe my system is just not up to running SVD, but it's looking good now. I thought I had it running OK at one point a while back, but was beginning to think I dreamed it or something.
Running 3 desks along with WB, OD, Opera, some widgets & assorted apps-- no problem!

Is this effect is caused by my system or by SVD?

In post #12, I mentioned having a refresh/repaint problem when running SVD. The problem vanished after I ran JMB1984's vwmfix.reg. Then, when I unloaded SVG, the repaint didn't work for several minutes. Here's how it went:

I deselected SVD on the Taskbar/Toolbars menu. The SVD controls disappeared from the Taskbar. I had forgotten to close a couple of programs from a virtual desk & they appeared on the main desktop. When I closed the extra apps, the screen didn't refresh. Also, the wallpaper I used for Desk 1 in SVD was still loaded. Then, after a few minutes, the screen refreshed-- wallpaper changed & images of closed apps vanished. I thought maybe a cache emptied or something.

Is it a problem if the user doesn't close apps on the virtual desks before unloading SVD?

My system is old & may have contributed--

CPU: Pentium III, 670 MHz
Memory: 512 MB SDRAM

Hi Jeff,

Is it in your plans to make SVD compatible with Iconx ??

At the current time, the custom wallpapers of SVD are overwritten by the default wallpaper when Iconx is running

Ah very good question. Yeah I'd like IconX and SVD running and still see my custom backgrounds.

Does anyone else have the problem of desktops losing applications? I cannot use these desktops for serious work because programs disappear when I switch from one desktop to another. I can't get them back (retrieve all windows doesn't do the job, tabbing doesn't do the job). The programs appear in Program Manager but not on the desktops. This has to be a general problem because it occurs on both my laptop and my workstation.

Yes, that is a problem I encounter to. It typically happens when I switch away from (or switch to) a desktop that has a "busy" application running (typically something that is connecting to a network resource - MS Outlook and Lotus Notes tend to do this to me.) "Retrieve all windows" will not get it back - the only way is to kill the missing app from the task manager and restart it. This has happened on all versions of SVD that I've used. On the older version of SVD (where running apps weren't filtered from the task list) I could at least get the "missing" app back on screen by using keyboard shortcuts to move the window back into the visible area - that doesn't work anymore.

It'd probably be a good idea to move this into a new "thread" - how do we do that?

Chris TH:

Not sure Chris, you might want to ask the author of that app. The virtual desktops don't ever generate any keystrokes or fake-send messages to any apps, etc. Other than hiding/showing/moving them around of course. But in the docklets case, this shouldn't matter.

Might want to ask the author what other than the actual keycombo (if, say, you disable the key combo altogether) could cause this.

aimzzz: for some background, so you have your desktop configured to show your desktop icons, and does your desktop not have any "web objects" on it. (e.g. that old 'active desktop' stuff)

It sounds like something it getting in the way of the wallpaper hooking unloading. Try right clicking and then "refresh" on the desktop... perhaps also, try changing the wallpaper, or resizing the taskbar briefly.

I don't think the other apps being on the other desktops would be the cause of this.

Though we have not yet set time aside for it, Alberto and I are expecting to get together to make the two technologies compatible. Stardock products should be able to work together, even in conflict. The main technical issue is that it's not just normal background switching going on, we each have special techniques in place in order to make our presentations as fast and efficient as possible.

yes, good idea for a different thread. I've never noticed that personally but I have it in my notes now to investigate further with MS Outlook being on alternate desktops. Question, does this still happen in that "mode 2"?

Thanks Jeff, that occurred to me also but then I realised it's only with the last 2 builds of BandVWM that it's begun happening.

Prior to that they all played happily together. Has some change in the BandVWM updates occurred that may have triggered this behaviour with SysStats?

I thought I'd ask before running off to Judge (SysStats author).

I have installed the newest build (1.99e) and it seems more robust to losing applications from virtual desktops. However, they still do disappear. Try this: make 4 desktops and put outlook, solitare, firefox and object edit on one each. Now switch back and forth among the desktops. At some point, solitare will disappear. I've duplicated it several times. Now solitare disappearing isn't a big deal, but on my work machine serious stuff (like Word or Outlook) do go away, and that makes virtual desktops a non-starter for me there.

Hi "do not use this name". I'm afraid I couldn't reproduce it on my laptop that way. I've been using build e all day and haven't had a window disappear yet but that doesn't mean anything as I can go for days without it happening. How fast is your PCs CPU - maybe it's related to hardware?

BTW - did you notice that I started a new thread for this problem Link. I'll copy the last 2 entries from this thread into it...

So I've put in a post at the SysStats forum to see if there's any possible reason for this behaviour from that side.

However, it doesn't really explain why the older versions of BandVWM worked fine and the problem only surfaced with the newer (last two) versions. Any comments on this?

Hi Chris,

Well lets see. I added more sophisticated "hang-checking"; part of that timeout-sends a WM_NULL message to the window. Windows are not supposed to repond to a WM_NULL message by its definition, so hopfully his windows are not. That's all the correspondance that goes on however. Other than that, it's property setting and deferwindowpos. This does happen with the VWM set to each of the modes right?Hopfully Judge can shed something of light on this.

Yes, it does happen in both modes. Even just the action of changing the mode caused the dialogs to pop up (after clicking OK/Apply)!

Hopfully Judge can shed something of light on this.

I hope so too
