Bad, Very Bad Game Performance

Hangs now and then

Hi all.

I'm playing a game which is annoying me!

i'm allmost at the point of conquerring 1 entire solar system but everytime i zoom in or out or want to build something (or rather...everytime i perform an action) the game hangs for 1 or 2 seconds and then goes on.

It's driving me nuts!

my system specs:
- Intel Core2Duo 2.4Ghz
- 4GB Ram
- 1TB disk space
- Geforce 8800 GTX
- Windows Vista 32Bits

Game details:
- Custom Galaxy
- 2 Solar systems
- No marouding (allthough it still happens...waaaay to much pirates! (every planet is defence stronghold)
- 100 Planets
- Normal difficulty

oh, and sorry for my bad english (i'm dutch )

Hey

Theres alot of reasons it could happen heh.
Though you got 4GB of memory, so it cant be that the swapfile is being used.

You sure you got all drivers up to date?

You could try and run the game in window mode, and start taskmanager, to see if there is something else, that uses alot of process power, when it hangs.

that is going to be fixed in the upcomming patch

It is not the game.Uninstall and update every driver you have.

It is not the game.

So sure are we?
Well, you cant say its not the game, cause different things, happens to different specs.

Like my own special bug, when ever i quit sins, everything else started, like notepad, it require 100% of a core.

So tmaniac you tryed to restart your machine?
Hehe...yes i did restart the machine, this game is my savegame with a game-time of about 10 hours (yeah i'm slow )

all of my drivers are up to date...i checked that...going to try a reboot again see if it helps (i'll keep you posted!)

ok, after reboot the game performance remains dreadfull.

My PC is more than addaquate to run the game on high detail (as i;m doing atm) but it's like the game can't handle so many planets with so much defensive structures (about 12 turrets per planet)

Update:
After testing some stuff i noticed something;

when i zoom in to my main attack fleet and have no planets or anything on the background everything goes smooth.
When i change the angle so that i can see the rest of the solar system on the background it goes very, VERY laggy and slow.

(drivers are up to date and my hardware is more than good...i could post the savegame for the devs if they want?)

1 thing i should add (don't know if it's importand) somewhere in the beginning of this match i had a game-crash and sent the dumpfile to the minidump mail i then whent on with my latest savegame, could the crash earlier in the game have had anything to do with it?

Could you post you savegame here? just remember to zip it hehe

Then ill try it as i got more or less the same PC as you, just QX6700 and Vista 64bit, as the difference

It's the video drivers.

The Geforce 8800 on Vista has awful AWFUL performance in the released drivers. There's beta drivers that address this (I don't have a link handy).  Also, GalCiv II: Dark Avatar v1.6 will help too.

Even tho, im using Vista 64bit, and 32bit some time ago, i didnt see a problem like this

But heres the Link to the 158.45 beta drivers, to see if that works

I used them myself, and they work great

haha, didnt reply to that, but now i feel the need

Never had any serious problems, tho vista is new, and therefor, will have a few bugs here and there.
Been able to run my games, and almost every program, tho some dont like 64bit.

Bow before me, or face my rath

I'd also like to chime in on this thread.

I’ve been running SOASE on a x2 4400+ and a 8800GTX at 2560*1600 in Vista with every graphic option set to the max.

I’ve used all different vista drivers from the very first one right up to 160.04 (one of the most recent) and I have never had this or any problem like it with SOASE. (I’ve never had a problem with galciv either )

I’m going to create a dump email address tonight, could you send me a save game file and ill have a look.

Besides one game that stubbornly refuses to run in vista my gaming experience has been good. Up until this point I’ve only had one blue screen of death caused by a hardware failure. Not that I had a lot of crashes in XP but definitely more than once every 6 months.

I will zip the save game tonight (at work atm) and put it on my webserver so you can d/l the savegame (it's 108MB big   )

Which driver specifically are you using? You should be able to check dxdiag to confirm.

I am going to guess that is Vistas fault, I have way less than you and my game runs amazingly. 1280x960 Full Detail including 16x AF (No AA, I hate AA). I rarely notice a hitch. FX-51 2gb RAM, geforce AGP 7800oc 72gb(total) raptor RAID 0 array, my machine is no slouch but far from top of the line, yours on the other hand is an A- (maybe B+ if your standards are really high; liquid cooled, etc.) gaming machine, near top of the line, you by all standards SHOULD have way better performance. I have to chalk it up to Vista, I saw a nice laptop with Vista that choked with Warcraft 3......WARCRAFT 3!!! That game is 5 years old! Check all your drivers, and remove all nonessential processes and programs. I am sorry if some of this is a repeat of info as I did not read all the posts.

Good Luck

i have a dualboot (windows XP x64 on another partition)...going to try this now...will report back
Reply #23 Top
Ok, update:
Just rebooted into windows XP x64, updated display drivers and activated/started the game.
The performance of the save game is (if possible) even WORSE than in vista! it goes at a rate of 1 frame per second (or something like that)
So i guess it's not the fault of my drivers...OR os

lol ^^
Ive also got this problem, but with smaller maps.
But i know thats because my hardware is old.
Maybe there is an interference problem within your hardware.

heat
cheap Ram or defect Ram
defect motherboard or graphic card

You should search in that direction.
Changing your System to Xp isnt advisable, because many new drivers only work with Vista or are working better with Vista.

i think that would be weird, 2 machines got the same faulty hardware.
I dont seem to have a problem when playing my own games, but loading his savegame, it runs around 10fps+-
