It is certainly better here than other places I could mention, but he has insinuated things I could do without in this or that thread (whether trying to be funny or not, it's unnecessary.) The reason I have a hard time taking any forum dicussion about 8 seriously (even knowing many of you do use a much newer OS) is the number of people who still think XP is the greatest thing since sliced bread. They're usually the ones I consider technologi

Strategy game ports from PC to console usually do not do well because of the totally different control schemes.
The PS3 supports KB+M as I recall, and all the C&C games between 2 and 4 (3, Kanes Wrath, RA3 iirc) were on the X360. Never tried them of course.
what amazes me in this Thread is I give specific, concrete, real world example of Windows 8 issues and they get dismissed and ignored by its proponents. I'm pretty sure I've got at least as much, if not more, Windows 8 hours as anyone in this thread. I don't have some problem with change. I know how to use it. But it invariably takes more steps to do the same common tasks as previous versions.
You gave

Windows XP is quite capable of using Dirext X 10 or 11..... it is merely Microsoft didnt wanted that back then... because it desperatly needed something to sell shitty Vista to people. You know they ported Dirext X 9 to Linux... speak about an OS that is different from the very core architecture. 32 Bit.... ahh yes.. of course... but if i look arround an see all those mob
Why are you happy that XP dies?
Because its been holding back gaming for years? It's a ball and chain on the industry, that they could just undo if they wanted to but they're afraid of pissing anyone off. Same as DX9 and 32 bit OSes and the Xbox 360 and PS3...though it's harder to let go of those until the new stuff comes out
The thing is, all their games already have this ability. I'm not really sure he said anything meaningful there.
Either way it'll take time to find out. I just think people are a bit quick to jump to conclusions. If they do stick with the Store being the only normal way to get stuff I'd expect the cost of Windows to drop dramatically. Either way I'll be extremely happy next year when XP effectively dies out. (Blue sounds cool too, another note. Free kernel upgrade. Right on. Wish I knew more about it, but I can wait.)
I didn't confuse anything. WinRT will replace in time Win32, after which it'll be a blackbox as i described. There is no other way forwards for MS. W8 is dead in the water and no tweaking that mess is going to get it alive.
There are officially documented methods of sideloading apps. It's actually pretty easy to do. The Windows Store is certainly going to be the default meth
WinRT is a way to control application delivery to your system. Nothing will run in the WinRT box that isn't signed by Windows Store, i.e. for which you pay MSTax to download. I paid MSTax for 20 years for MS-DOS i never used, no way i'm going to pay any longer.
As I said, Windows RT is not WinRT. And you can run unsigned WinRT apps on a desktop.
IE10 is damn good for a change. I haven't been arsed to switch back from it to Chrome at all.
Unfortunately since IE8 isn't going anywhere yet, it's just one more version to support.
True, but that's your decision. Google already told IE8 users to piss off. It actually shocked me anyone was actually willing to take a stance on supporting browsers until the end of time.
- WinRT is the solution to a problem (terrible Win32 APIs) that doesn't exist on a blank slate like a new console (unless they choose to make it so), and significant portions of it aren't terribly relevant to a console. They can of course just use it as a contract with an entirely custom underlying implementation specific to the Xbox's OS and architecture...
It'd also be a common thread between tablets, PCs
The issue Windows 8 has 'at launch' is genuinely solid competition from Windows 7 itself. iPads or 'Android' are irrelevant to OS take-up on a PC. All Windows 7 had at launch was a wonky Vista....so it was warmly welcomed, and rightly so. The whole issue re Windows 8 is it's bastardisation of a good OS so as to accommodate universality over all uses. In truth it is the epitome of
I mean I could go into Windows 7 at launch not having solid competition from iPad or Android for computing, I could go into any number of other things that have already been said, but that's what we've been doing since October already. It gets old arguing like children over personal preference. It's the people arguing that their opinion is the only one anyone should ever have that bug me, personally.

Clearly MS knew they had screwed up...even before release...and the low price was the hit they were willi

Also, it does have a concept of closing programs. I don't know how to do it with touch, but on the PC you just hover to bring up the task switcher on the left and right click on whatever WinRT app you want to close. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/02/07/improving-power-efficiency-for-applications.aspx In the second sta
Oh, the final insult is of course Windows 8. It has no concept of "closing" a program, so start enough of them, and you zap the battery real fast. Which kind of defeats the purpose of a tablet (at least one major part of it).
Actually it does. If the app is not in focus it will suspend, thereby using no resources or battery whatsoever.
SSDs have more issues than understood by most people. My Revo doesn't have TRIM, and when you do a specific utilization pattern it will practically freeze up (20mb/sec writes) until it can do a proper GC pass. Often the speed will be reduced if you go over a firmware hardcoded limit, and when things get fragmented they're still going to slow down SSD or no. There's even counterfeit Flash in some cases <a href="http://thessdrevi
I completely understand if you think I'm taking a less than subtle dig at Stardock with that first point, but it's not about that...it's practically the entire industry still doing it.
I still haven't seen this mythical touch UI, so I can't see a problem either [e digicons][/e]
