Sell me Windowblinds with an installer and get rid of that Impulse crap and I'll give you $30 for WB 7. Now there's a deal for you. Meh to the new Stardock :HOT:
MeSleeper
Thanks guys. I have no plans to install Impulse. I understand Stardock has to do what they think is right for them. I'll stick with WB 6.4 until I switch to Win 7 then remove everything Stardock related. No big deal.
Is WB 7 available as a standalone download with installer or does one have to go through Impulse to download and install?
Neil - you might want to double check that. I tried to download WB the other day to see if I have the most up-to-date WB build and the link told me WB was "Impulsedriven" and asked me to install Impulse. Same for IconPackager and SkinStudio. I'm one release behind on SkinStudio Pro and I think one behind on IconPackager. So far I'm okay on WB. What I've got works well on XP. I have the standalone installers and S/N's saved.&nbs
Bichur - yup Impulse is unnecessary bloat from my perspective. When I switch to 64 bit Win 7, I plan to do a fresh install. At that point Stardock and I will part ways. It happens. No regrets. I asked VStyler, the author of the skin called Naked about the white text. His response was "IE text is not fully supported by WB yet." Not sure what that means ... but I took his word for it. He does good careful work. &nbs
Thanks Bichur. I did not explain myself well. What you describe is what I see. I see black text in the bar and white text for "Page" "Safety" and "Tools." If I didn't know those three menus were there, I'd probably miss them. The IE8 drop down menus appear normal for me too. Sorry to be confusing on that. I apparently have the most current build. Appreciate all your help through the years. If SD refuses to relent on Impulse,
Folks - may I ask what the latest WB 6.4 build is? My version says build 73x86. I have a few minor problems with IE8 and some newer skins. Wondering if a more current WB build addresses issues with IE8 and better text visibility? If so, I'll call SD Support and see if they can help me get access to a newer build without going through Impulse. If they can't help me, are there any workarounds? Any WB or IE8 setting ad
I voted no. Stardock and I are now in divorce court. We're arguing over Impulse, they insist, I refuse, no reconciliation is forthcoming. When I switch to Win 7, it will include a fresh install and a final decree on our divorce. I'll leave the marriage with no hard feelings. I wish SD continued success.
There are a few skins (like the 2008 GUI winner FreeArea) where the start menu shows the text on the right half of the XP Start Menu, but not the icons. Wondering is that a skin design phonomena or is there a WB setting I can change to have the icons show up? Thanks.
If there is anyone else still encountering the "black menu" problem, here's a brief update. I tried a few registry tweaks from SD Tech Support without success. I forwarded the log reports back for evaluation. Tech Support is aware of the problem and are still working on recreating and solving this issue. No one had a solution as of week ago. I'm sure it will be solved eventually. The problem is skin specific. SD's own Diamond causes problems. I've found another skin that reproduce
Bichur/aufisch - after further review, I don't have NView Desktop Manager running. There are actually two Nvidia control functions installed into Control Panel. One is NView Desktop Manager, the other is the NVidia general setting icon. It is the general setting function that starts up by default and shows up as an icon in the tray. It changes simple things like resolution size. NView Desktop Manager is not started by default. One has to start it intentionally and I've not done that. <b
aufisch - Electo's "solution" was not anything but an artifact of the problem. What happens is random. I'll bet if he weighs in here, he'd confirm he saw it again after the re-install. I did an uninstall/re-install recently. I saw this problem with version 6.0. When 6.1 was released, I uninstalled 6.0 and re-installed 6.1. I'm pretty anal about what goes on my hard drive, so am careful and cautious when I update. I rarely install on top of an old installation. The problem re-appea
Here's a forum link that does a good job (with screenshots) describing what I see: [link="https://forums.wincustomize.com/173156"]WWW Link[/link] As poster Electo describes, the problem occurs only with certain skins and is random. I find if I do a lot of skin changes, the menus on the "problem" skins can be made to go black. Other than Diamond, most of my problems are with older skins (pre-WB 6). Issue started with WB 6 and didn't get better with WB 6.1. Never happened with W
Thanks Bichur - I understand. I have no problem posting information if the request has a real purpose. I'm pretty certain my WB installation is solid. This problem has been documented on the forum for awhile. The only solution I've seen is to re-boot, possibly suggesting memory or resource leaks. OS = Windows XP WindowBlinds version : WindowBlinds 6.1 (build 55 x86) WindowBlinds is installed correctly on this PC WindowBlinds appears to be activat
There are two responses in this forum that get under my skin ... no pun intended :) The first one is copy and paste the system information. The second one is update with SDC. Daiwa if you know what you're talking about, and think you might have a substantive answer, I'll happily paste that information here. If you're asking in order it to see I dropped 20 bucks, save your energy. If your response after I paste that information is update to a newer version using SDC, I don't use SDC
I know this has been discussed on the forum, but I don't think I've ever seen a solution or definitive cause described. Not saying there isn't one, just sayig I haven't ever seen either and the search function isn't working for me today! There are a handful of skins, mostly older ones, where the right context menus and drop down menus turn black during use. The only way to read the text is to mouse over the dark menu. Is this a resource leak, a video driver problem, or what? Is ther
Adam - I've seen the same thing. I love the Midnight colors. I've mentioned to Butch a couple times in the forum that his skins seem to work perfectly with XP except for the start menu. He's not replied either time to my posts and continued to work toward an "XP version." I can only assume there is more involved than simply changing the start menu. Unfortunately everytime Butch releases a "XP version" I've had more problems with it than the "Vista version." Crazy, huh? I think you
Thanks Bichur. That did it. I'm impressed with Stardock software. I like every SD program I have, however, this is the third time I've had to force a change manually in the registry to get a Stardock program to work fully. What's up with that? I don't think I'm running any security software or settings that should prevent registry changes. SD software seems to be the only software that has a registry modification problem. I'd like to understand what that's all about if anyone knows
I'm going to be lazy, so forgive me :) Normally I search the forum before posting, but it's been a long week. I bought IconPackager last week. I have version 3.20. I downloaded several very nice icon packages from Wincustomize and Deviantart. If I try to load these packages using IconPackager's "Load" function I get an error that I'm missing a file. I seem to recall the missing file to be sdcunzip.dll (or something similar to that). To get around this missing file problem, I rename the
mitche323 - thanks for the comments and the suggestion. The lag I saw was slight, but enough that picky ole me noticed it with the more graphic intense skins. That, among other reasons, forced me "to bite the bullet" and replace the old beast with a newer unit. Don't see it anymore. I have a widescreen LCD. I've tried playing with the refresh rate, but haven't seen much effect. Do refresh rates even apply with LCD's? Curious minds want to know :) Thanks again. <br/
Koasatu - I missed the option to turn that stuff off. Thanks. I agree, we all have different tastes. Maybe that's why we're attracted to software that customizes our desktop. Hmmmm :D
Hankers - because I tried SDC ... didn't like the junk it added and then got rid of it. Simple enough concept. I trust you will respect that, even if you don't agree. SDC might be the right program for those who have the whole Object Desktop package. I own WB, DesktopX and SkinStudio. I don't need a third party program that sprays extra fluff on my hard drive to manage those installations. I know you're busy on this forum and volunteer your time. No intention to argue wit
I can understand this guy's frustration, maybe not his attitude, but certainly his frustration. I've had only one problem with WB. I filed a Tech Support ticket and received courteous help which in the end did not work. Both the support person and I were stumped. He suggested I post on this forum because there's plenty of help to be found here. The only help I got was the tired old response you see to every problem: 1) copy and paste your WB info here and 2) update your ver
When this happens to a legitimate user and you happen to be that user, it's darn frustrating. It happened to me with version 5.51. Turned out in my case it was the Windowblinds service not starting ater the 5.51 installation. I had to force the service to start manually by editing the registry. I have great faith in SD and think their software is great, but never again will I install a new version of Windowblinds without first making a full backup/image. Version 5.51 is th
Thanks Daiwa. That sounds better. SD does too good a job to let something sloppy like that happen. I am relieved ... like it matters :D
