Play smaller maps too. Start out on small, subnormal difficulty, 3-4 opponents. It'll give you a nice challenge for your first couple of games. And make sure you buy your first few factories and/or colony ships. Don't bother building scouts because your colony ships can scout as they look for planets. But don't overdo it if you play 1.1 or your population growth will collapse and you'll be even mroe screwed than if you undercolnized instead of overcolo

Assuming you had 100 defence, you can roll anywhere from 0 to 100. You have the same chance of rolling a 0 as you have of rolling a 100. Get it? Higher numbers just reduces the chance of you getting a low roll and increases you maximum roll. Likewise for attack.

You can eitehr wipe 'em out and take their planet or befriend them and use them as a trading partner. You can also give them ships and pay them off to attack other people (but the AI will know you paid them off in 1.1).

I think it'd be a good idea, but only if you're at war with that race. You'd still have to keep your eye open for sneak attacks and you won't be constantly spammed by messages about where the ships are.
