You have loaded the latest patch haven't you? You should be running version 1.2. This sounds like the AIs have been made stupid and you need to reset the intelligence level of each race. Just a note, you can't actually set the level higher than the highest level allowed for a 'challenging' game. Try setting your difficulty to Suicidal and then set all the intelligences to Incredible and then change your difficulty back to whatever you want to play at. If you have any experience I woul

I never bother to build weapons upgrades on a starbase anymore. They are too slow and expensive to upgrade. I just put a ship on the same tile and have it guard the starbase. It is easy to upgrade that ship as I get better weapons and armor. I feel that this area of the game is pretty flawed and needs some rethinking to make it practical to use starbases this way.

Nah, the AIs buy colony ships until they are broke. Have you ever looked at how far in debt some of them are at the end of the colony rush? No wonder thay can't build their planets, they must need to turn production almost off until they repay that debt. The Torians are particularly good at this part of the game. No doubt dystopic has it about right except he forgot about the first colony ship they bought on the first turn so by turn 3 they can have 5 colony ships from 2 planets

I play on Masochistic and I read about people with weapons at the end of the tech tree but I just don't ever get that far into the tech tree. It is a rare game that I will get much past 3 levels of weapons or armor and I rarely get all the econ/research bonus' researched. On a long game I might get 'eyes of the universe' but I don't think I have ever researched all the levels of ship size. I usually win about the time I am thinking of researching large ships. I am a warmonger in my games, I don'

Painful IS too easy. Crippling IS too easy. Masochistic starts to be a challenge but is generally always winnable. Obscene is actually hard and Suicidal is a real challenge now that 1.2 is out if you don't use cheesy tactics. There are 2 problems with the AI that make this so. One, they just don't develop their planets at all well. I would even say that for the most part they do it poorly. It may be that there is code that keeps them from developing a planet if it is out on the front lines at al

I had pirates in my previous game. They had 2 ships and I killed them right away. They never bothered me again. I am running 1.2 and it is the first time I have seen any of the 'random' events.

First time I saw the Snathy I almost died laughing. What a great sense of humor Stardock has! They were actually in my last game and were at war with the Drath the whole game. I kept feeding them money and warships and they kept the Drath busy until very near the end when they finally succumbed. It's good being Evil and having a friend (I was Drengin).

I usually play on Crippling or Masochistic. I usually play as an evil race so that everyone hates me. Then I usually go to war with the biggest opponent as soon as I can afford to build war ships. Usually other 'good' races try to pile on. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge that being ganged up on provides. Alright, I admit it, 'I am a warmonger!'.

I prefer to start with Ion Drive and then research Hyper Drive immediately. I turn off military constuction and set social to about 20% so that I can get Hyper Drive in about 6 turns. Then build a good colony ship (one colony module - I only put about 300 pop per ship) and the rest engines and life support. You can have 5-7 speed colony ships. Turn military production up high and start buying and building colony ships. In the meantime research any tech that increases production before ever bothe

Let's see, I always have a hard time with the levels but I think it is Tough, Painful, Crippling, Masochistic.... If I am right then I find Crippling fun (everything lower is too easy) but Masochistic is almost too hard to be fun. It used to be that prior to 1.2 I could play Obscene and have fun but the new build has made the game quite a bit harder. If Stardock would finish the job of having the AI build it's planets up well then I think the game would be hard even at Painful.

Uh no. The new AI switch lets the AIs design new spaceships every turn instead of once a year. Turning this switch on does make the AIs more competitive, because they can actually field ships with their latest techs.

Yeah, but I hate needing to be that artificial in order to get a good game. Now that 1.2 is out it is much harder to win on the last 3 difficulty settings if you turn off tech trading and avoid any cheesy tactics. I also like Medium Galaxies with everything Abundant. It is kind of like playing a Large galaxy except that everything and everyone is right on top of each other. It sort of maximizes the tension right from the start. And then pick evil against a pack of good races and you WILL find it

I actually do play some of the grossly unfair maps when I am in a disadvantaged start. But I seem to be getting starts where the Korx get 40 planets and the Your get 40 more and everyone else gets 3-5. If I don't quickly eat all the little guys then I am dead. Now I might as well be playing a game with only 2 other civs. That is why I don't like them much. I do agree (and said so I think) that bigger galaxies don't have this problem so much, but they take too long for my tastes. I don

I just about never make alliances any more. I just don't think it's fair to the stupid AI to back stab him like that. I try to declare my evilness early and ramp up my military production to deal with the ramifications. One game just before 1.2 came out I was bored and played as the Drengin and selected all Good/Neutral races to play against. It was awesome, I got attacked by 4 other races in rapid succession. Too bad none of them could 'bring it' though. Now in 1.2 I would be a littl

In 1.2 it seems as though the galaxy generator isn't doing a very good job of spreading the wealth. Some games I need to ctrl-n 10 times before I get a galaxy where most races seem to stand a chance. Too many times one or two races get all the solar systems and everyone else is stuffed into a corner all piled on top of each other with very few extra solar systems. For me, even if I am one of the 'lucky' ones, I reload until I get some sort of relatively fair distribution. I don't remember having

I think the may also be driven by whether you are good or evil. If I am evil the other race almost always surrenders to someone else. Last night I was playing as good and I had 3 races all surrender to me. The last one surrendered their last 5 planets.

I do see this a little. I will start a new game tonight and check that every civ's intelligence is on the highest one possible. I shall report back tomorrow.

I only build achievements on my high industrial planets, otherwise they take too long to build. Like Sxt178 I build nothing but research facilities on low PQ planets (except I will start with an industrial site but later decommission it). Large planets mean large populations and large incomes. I had a PQ21 planet with a 700% research tile as my research capitol in my last game. I was generating over 300 research per week. Most of my middle PQ planets focus on industrial capacity with just enough

Just play as an evil race on Painful or higher and choose evil early on. Watch out though cause you are probably gonna die. Still, if you survive the early attacks by the 'good' races, the game quickly gets easy because the AI still isn't developing planets very well. I admit it is a LOT better than 1.1, but it is still pretty brain dead in this regard.

I just finished a game under 1.2 and everyone colonized pretty well. Most races had 7 or 8 planets in a medium galaxy. While I did prevail, the Drengin in particular gave me a good run for my money. However, once my espionage was good, it still looks like the other races just aren't developing their planets very well. Yes, they now put the right things on the right tiles, but to still have many empty tiles late in the game is pretty unexcusable. Also it appears that the AI should have

Pirates?! I have never seen pirates in the 30 or more games that I have played! I have had the federation vote to put weapons on transports (which come free!) so maybe they voted to put some on transports in your game?

Just create your own names. For instance, when I play as the Yor, I generally name my leader (is that me?) something like Baba Yor. I like to have fun with the names. I once played a custom civ game as the Hobbits living on the Shire. It was pretty fun seeing the message that The Hobbits have captured Dratha!

Like other features of the game that I would prefer to be different, I don't worry about this one. So what if the game is just a tad harder if I lose a little production between items? If I can't win in spite of that issue I try to figure something else out. Just like the cheesy tactics so many people use, I would consider this one item that isn't worth adding to my repetoire. If skipping these things makes the game harder, so much the better. I play for the challenge, not just the win.
