There are even a tech which will give you back more resources when scuttling.

Suggestions and balance issues: Reverie ability of the Revelation Battle Cruiser: As mentioned at lvl 3 it can lock down 3 targets indefinately. It reads that ships should be damaging it while stunned, and this damage will break it, but there seems to be an issue here. Often my ally would use it and the only thing I could get to attack the stunned target was the auto attack of my Halycon; the rest of my fleet would always try to fly off after another target. Net result: perma-stunne
Static defences usually wont stop a large siege spam, but those ships you had should. 17 seige frigs are not in anyway cheap. Did you scout and see they were coming? I would love to see the replay if you wouldn't mind posting it.
Don't forget the Advents Radiance Battleship and its lvl 6 Cleansing Brilliance. My record is 17 Colbalts in one shot so far. :HOT: If you win the battles and he retreats, nab the planet and follow. If you win each engagement I don't see the issue other then the annoyance factor. All he is doing is feeding your Caps more exp and wasting money on getting new ones.
If you downloaded the game you should have the manual in pdf form in your Sins folder. I dont know about the DVD install, however.
Defense structures are the home team advantage. Force him to fight both your fleet and your defense. If he ignores your fleet you have have the battle. If he ignores your defense make sure to be in range of your repair structures, and make him come to you. ;) Fleets win the gam, both offensively and defensively; defense simply stalls or inhibits the ememy.
I personally like the fleet mechanic, but I also generally play 2v2s or 3v3s, so I have allies to help cover territory.
I'm inclined to agree with Windexglow. It sounds like they just panicked and ran like little baby girls at the slightest hint of trouble.
If you read the manual it describes the event: "When a single, heavily damaged warship from the Dark Fleet appeared out of phase space in orbit of a planet on the empire's perimeter, the inhabitants decided to board the ship. What they found were the remains of a once battle-hardened crew driven mad with fear" (Training Maunual, pg. 6-7
I'm hoping they make the AI tear-your-hair out impossible, without making it cheat.
Me too. I hope they make the Hard AI tougher in coming patches by refining the computers strategy / tatics, and not just making cheating AIs(yes I know they are thinking about adding cheating AIs too). Iirc someone from IC or SD said they planned to see what strategies players used and then incorperatting them into the AI, which I sincerly hope they do. Fighting an AI that just is tough because
Anti-matter recharge is the TEC bonus. Advent is damage midigation. Does anyone know if you benifit from allied culture bonuses?
