I have little to no problem with them only opening up the beta to pre-order customers. The game that they give in the beta is pretty complete (if you like TEC...) and I don't blame them for not wanting to shell it out for free. They don't ask for much price-wise, and if you bought the last three versions like you said you did, 30 dollars is hardly a lot to ask for a great new game.

A lot of people online play the one hit - one kill mod. Each ship and factory and everything builds 20x faster, is 20x cheaper, but only has 1 serviceable hp. Game on. The only thing that remains the same is planet hp.

If you really want to get better at this game, you should start playing TEC. They have really powerful capital ships, particularly the Dunov capital ship. Spam these like no tomorrow. As far as supporting frigates and cruisers go, only build Cielo command cruisers and siege frigates. Do not build colony frigates or colonize planets because it is a waste of resources that could be poured into Dunovs.
Hi EmpReb, one thing that I have found to help desperate beginners is to poop your pants before the game starts, and then sit down and let the poop stay in your pants during the duration of the game. This gives you a nice semi-liquid swivel chair to allow you to scan the battlefield easier and navigate through the tough onslaught of siege frigates and colony frigates you will likely face. As a player who has to fight against trolls on a day-to-day basis on ICO i feel your frustration.
