Shadowhal, For example, Sword of the Stars (SOTS) is a turn-based 4x with real-time tactical combat and has SIX races. Its first release had four factions, and added two more with two expansions. It would be a great disappointment to me if SOASE doesn't at least get in the ball park of six races/factions. The 4x aspect isn't really going to be there until IC implements more races/factions. I'm not just talking about one or two. We need GalCivII or SEV amounts of races/factions for it to have the feel of an epic space empire game. It'll possibly be harder to balance than other 4x games b/c there is more emphasis on combat, but SOTS did it (with 6). I hope a big expansion adds a least 4 more factions/races.
If you could do a resized Doomstar/battleball, Dyson Sphere , and Ringworld (complete with superweapon ability like in Halo haha), I would be a very happy camper. Danman, Loving the mod, but have a few suggestions: Atlantian research: It's incredibly unclear what techs unlock certain ships. Only Ares actually reads "Unlock: Ares" under one of the techs in the tech tree. So, as a user you're just clicking and guessing until eventually you unlock capital ships, or Titans. Yeah, I know about Flagships but maybe I'm saying more story to them. Have three vessels that are like... Emperor blah blah's personal vessel or whatever. Be comparable to the one Flagship but give certain bonuses related to the character. Perhaps even when you click on the ship, the icon in the lower display shows the character rather than a drawing of the ship...

My game has crashed twice now halfway through a game. I get a "runtime error." Don't think it's b/c of the original game. Something (mysterious) to do with your mod IMHO. Hmmm... It might be b/c of the artifact issue. I dunno though.

I got this idea by posting in evil's Star Wars mod. Has anyone thought about making leaders for the vanilla races? For example, players can create like 3 ships which are the personal vessels of leaders from the game. Obviously we don't have a lot of the background of the game, but perhaps we could speculate.
Hey evil, Question 1: have you thought about calling the unaligned forces Black Sun? (if they represent the underworld)... Or it'd be great if you could make a pirate faction called Black Sun with StarViper ships and other infamous underworld vessels. That's one thing I hated about Empire at War was that Zann's faction should have just been the Black Sun. Xizor was really the head of the Underworld, and if not him, the Hutts. Maybe they were trying to be original.
I think you're right on about placing the artifacts near the center. A lot of the balanced TI3 maps do it that way.
I think a map is a great start! I definitely think making the central star (Mecatol Rex) special is very important to capturing the feel of TI. Yeah, TI is one of those things that few people play b/c it takes so long, and it's hard to convince others to learn.

I've done very little modding so I'm the wrong dude to spearhead this project, but someone should do a mod of Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition with Shattered Empire. For those who are unaware, it's a board game from Fantasy Flight Games. I think most modern 4x games borrow from a lot of its elements.
