I had the same problem changing to the awesome one I have now. I just used IE, works fine.

On point one, I agree. Point two is already solved, you always do get an audio notice when enemy ships encroach upon your territory. If you don't hear the notice though you get a video cue as well in the bottom left, on the far right report box. My mind kind of trained itself to freak out every time it saw red in those boxes. haha
