I always liked the Advent because they look the coolest while kicking ass. Guardians + Illums = big ball of swirly light that advances on your enemies, pushing them all back like leaves on pond, while beams of brilliant white light from the centre destroy everything. By comparison the Marza, while powerful, is a much more low-key strategy

exactly the same issue here - I'm ready and waiting with over 160% and the AI is still down in the mid 130% area; at some point they just stopped bothering with envoys completely. there's a bunch of them sat by one of my worlds, with adjacent planets getting no attention - they've been there ages so all but one must be doing absolutely nothing... how about an "invite envoy" button? oh, and while we're at it, how about a "here, you can colonise this world" button (for when they

I didn't know the pirates were any stronger until I read this... the only diplomacy games I've played so far were as Advent, and the (free) progenitor that formed my entire fleet at the time dealt with them just fine. The AI always likes to spam me with pirates... thing is I end up with stronger caps for the rest of the game, because of the early levels gained killing them. Plus they waste their money...
