I think a good reason to backstab someone could be that they result in a hostile take over. ie all planets ships and structures in an area are converted to your empire. it could the result of a tech that allows you to do the above if you take an opponents planet within a time limit of ending an alliance. and another ability could be forced 'Forced Production' Which allows you to build one logistic or tactical structure(more at
